Citrus Classic

MESA, Arizona, January 7. THE University of Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl swimming teams won the Citrus Classic swim meet in Mesa, Ariz., on Saturday. The Cowgirls won 11 total events scoring 526 team points giving them first place of the six-team field. The Cowboys won 12 events in today meet finishing with 484 total points which gave them first place of the three-team field. Cowgirl swimmers Kelsey Conci, Jordan Denny and Morgan Hartigan won multiple events, while Cowboys Marshall Dilworth, Jeff Frey, Trevor LeValley and Ethan Griffel also won two or more events in today's racing.
"It was a pretty dominating day today," Wyoming swimming head coach Tom Johnson said. "We worked really hard this week and the kids swam pretty well today."

Wyoming swept the first event of the day the 400 medley relay. The Cowgirls ‘A' team of Jordan Denny, Morgan Hartigan, Claudia Carlson and Shelby Bull touched wall first with a time of 3:53.79. The Cowboys ‘A' squad of Dilworth, Brandon Fischer, Frey and Griffel also won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:27.76.

"Our medley relays were really solid today," Johnson said.

Individually the Cowgirls, won 11 events with Conci, Denny and Hartigan winning two or more. Conci won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.04. She also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.94. Conci's third victory came by way of a tie with fellow senior Shelby Bull in the 100 freestyle touching the wall with a time of 53.51. Freshman Denny won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.79, while also winning the 500 freestyle (5:06.99). Sophomore Hartigan took first in the 100 butterfly (57.12) and touched wall first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05. 14.

Other Cowgirls winning events were Paige Fischer in the 1650 freestyle (17:33.13), Claudia Carlson in the 200 butterfly (2:06.73) and Jessy Badaracco in the 400 IM (4:31.78).

"Paige swam a very good mile today," Johnson said. "Jessy's 400 IM was a good swim as well."

On the men's side, senior Dilworth, junior LeValley as well as sophomores Griffel and Frey each won two events. Dilworth won the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.46 and also won the 100 butterfly (52.71). LeValley won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.71 and the 400 individual medley (4:07.15). Frey picked up wins for the Cowboys in the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 21.69 and 47.77, respectively. Griffel won two distance freestyle events in the 200 freestyle (1:47.16) and the 500 free with a time of 4:45.52.

Also winning events for the Pokes were Jayce Calhoon in the 1650 freestyle (16:19.71) and Fischer in the 100 breast (58.60).

Wyoming swimming will continue racing next Saturday, Jan. 14, against the University of Denver in Denver, Colo. The dual is set to begin at 1 p.m. MT.
