Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, November 11. THE University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team won all 16 events en route to a 237-60 victory over Cincinnati Friday night at Trees Pool.
"It was nice to walk into a meet against a Big East foe and perform at a high level," Head Coach Chuck Knoles said. "We saw several in-season bests tonight."

The meet opened with the Panthers earning a sweep in the 1M diving event, as sophomore Aaron Snyder, junior Eric Moore and freshman Harris Bergman took first through third. Snyder captured first with 326.78 points. Later, Moore won the 3M diving with 315.60 points. Snyder, Bergman and freshman Tyler Matheny turned in the next three top scores.

In the pool, Pitt dominated the freestyle events, sweeping the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free and 100 back. In the 50 free, senior Jake Van Roekel captured first at 21.27. Freshman Austin Caldwell and junior Hussein Medhat trailed for second and third.

Van Roekel would also claim gold in the 100 free with a time of 46.57. Medhat and sophomore Alexander Rodenkirk followed to round out the top three.

Later in the 200 free, freshman Jon Lierley and seniors Morne Boshoff and Ben Solari placed first through third, respectively. Lierley turned in the top finish at 1:43.54. He was also the top performer in the 200 IM (1:56.17).

In the final event of the night, Van Roekel, freshman Kourosh Ahani, Rodenkirk and Caldwell turned in a Big East top finish of 1:23.90 in the 200 free relay. That time eclipsed the previous season-best of 1:25.45.

In the 500 free, Boshoff was the victor at 4:38.26. Lierley and junior Jared Kolwyck took second and third in the race. Earlier in the meet, Kolwyck won the 1000 free (9:44.84) and Rodenkirk finished second in his first 1000 free swim of the season.

In the 100 back, junior Adam Maczewski turned in a first-place performance at 51.27. He led the Panthers in the final sweep of the meet as freshman Joey Notianni and Ahani rounded out the top three in the event. Ahani would also win the 100 fly at 50.16.

Earlier in the meet, Maczewski turned in a season-best 48.75 in the 100 back to open the 400 medley relay. Maczewski's lead was later extended as senior Ben Solari, Ahani and Van Roekel teamed to earn another conference best with a finish of 3:21.83. That time was nearly eight seconds faster than Cincinnati for second and was an improvement on the team's previous best of 3:23.87.

"To go 3.21 at this point in the season is impressive," Knoles stated. We are getting stronger and faster every week."

Other first-place performances included senior Rousseau Kluever in the 200 fly (1:51.42) and 200 back (1:53.66), freshman Luke Nosbisch in the 200 breast (2:05.28), senior Pierre-Antoine Meunier in the 100 breast (57.43),

Pitt's Performers of the Meet were Kluever and Van Roekel, while Medhat earned honorable mention accolades.

The Panthers will host the three-day Pitt Invitational on Nov. 18-20 at Trees Pool. Participating teams include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Ohio State and West Virginia.

Juniors Joanna Budzis and Kelsey Herbst claimed two first-place finishes to lead the University of Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team to a 217-82 victory over Cincinnati Friday night at Trees Pool.

Budzis won the 100 and 200 back events, while Herbst was first in the 200 and 500 frees. Budzis captured first in the 100 back as she was the only swimmer to touch the wall under a minute (57.28). Freshman Brooke Waugman and Kelsey Williams trailed her for second and third, respectively.

In the 200 back, Budzis stopped the clock nearly six seconds faster than the rest of the field. Budzis was first at 2:01.82, while sophomore Renee Deschenes and Williams rounded out the top three.

Herbst was the first to the wall in the 200 free (1:53.21). She was followed by freshman Tatyanna Sarjeant and junior Yolandi Van Der Merwe for second and third in the event.

Later, Herbst won the 500 free (4:59.58) for the third-consecutive meet this season. She was joined by sophomores Lauren Matevish and Kate Dunseith in the top three.

In addition to the four events mentioned, Pitt also swept the 1000 free, 100 fly and both diving events. Sophomore Julie Harrison won the 1000 free (10:19.36) and was followed by Dunseith and freshman Emily Bolek for second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Veronica Lee won the 100 fly (57.25), while Bolek and junior Tamara Lelli tied for second in the race. Bolek would also earn gold in the 200 fly (2:06.74).

In the diving events, sophomore Kimberly Ciotti led all on the 3M board. She posted a season-best with 265.80 points. Sophomore Leigh Waltz, junior Brittany DiSanti and sophomore Tori Brungo took the next three top scores. Later, Waltz won the 1M event, while Brungo and Ciotto claimed second and third.

Pitt won the opening relay, as Lee turned in the best 100 fly of the 400 medley at 56.09. She was the only swimmer to touch the wall under 58 seconds and gave the Panthers an advantage leading into the anchor free swam by freshman Dani des Tombe (51.91). Pitt's combined time was 3:50.43. Deschenes and freshman Cam Dixon swam the first two strokes of the event.

Individually, des Tombe won the 50 free (24.14) and was second in the 100 free (52.34). Lee won the 200 breast (2:18.29) and was third in the 100 breast, while Dixon touched for first in the 200 IM (2:06.85) and was second in the 100 breast.

In the final event of the meet, des Tombe, Budzis, freshman Lauren Mills and Sarjeant made up the first-place 200 free relay team (1:35.54).

Lelli was named the Pitt Performer of the Meet at the conclusion of the event.

The Panthers will host the three-day Pitt Invitational on Nov. 18-20 at Trees Pool. Participating teams include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Ohio State and West Virginia.
