Cincinnati Men, Houston Women Win 2018 AAC Titles

While the Houston women steadily solidified their lead in the race for the 2018 women’s American Athletic Conference championship team title, the men’s teams from Cincinnati and East Carolina duked it out for their AAC crown.

The championships concluded with the HU women swimming away with the women’s team title while Cincinnati won the men’s meet.

To open the session, Cincinnati senior Sara Wanasek took the women’s 1650 free in a 16:15.51, which earned her a new meet record.

In the men’s 1650 free we saw Wanasek’s teammate, Christopher Brady, take the win in a new meet record time of 14:54.88. Cincinnati would go on to take the next two spots with Din Selmanovic (15:09.72) and Tobias Van Dyke (15:20.58).

The Cincinnati women pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep in the platform diving event with Patricia Roscoe (211.85), Ellen Posch (207.00) and Claire Schuerman (194.80).

Matea Samardzic built off her win from last night and won the A final of the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.80, which broke the old pool record of 1:56.39. Taking second and third was Eleanna Koutsou (1:56.24) and Michelle Zelnic (1:57.42).

In the men’s race UConn’s William Kearsey took the win with a 1:43.89 with ECU’s Magnus Andersen touching second in a time of 1:44.48.

The Houston duo of Zarena Brown (49.09) and Mykenzie Leehy (49.67) took 1-2 in the women’s 100 free while ECU’s John Myre took the men’s race in a swift 44.23.

SMU’s freshman all-star Andrea Podmanik broke a meet record in the 200 breast with a 2:09.29 while ECU’s go-to freshman Jacek Arentewic took the men’s race in 1:54.55, which set a new meet record for the Pirates.

SMU continued to roll on as the meet came to a close for the individual races with Jonathan Gomez winning the men’s 200 fly in pool-record fashion in a time of 1:43.48.

The Houston women won the final event of the championships by posting a 3:18.56 in the 400 free relay. The ECU men wrapped up the meet with a win in the men’s 400 free relay by producing a time of 2:57.39.
