Chloe Sutton Career Retrospective (Photo and Video Gallery)

TUCSON – Chloe Sutton has been one of the most successful athletes in USA Swimming. She set the world on fire as a teenage prodigy in open water swimming, winning international medals before she could get a driver’s license.

And while few expected that Sutton would put her years as an open water swimmer behind her in 2009, she continued to impress, winning national titles in 2009 and 2010. Today’s announcement that Sutton is retiring hits the swimming community hard, as her brilliant smile and effervescent attitude livened up every pool deck she stepped on in her long career. That won’t completely disappear, and those who participate in the Fitter & Faster Tour will be able to learn from one of the best swimmers the sport has seen.

Swimming World has followed Sutton’s career from the beginning. We put her on the November 2006 cover of Swimming World Magazine as one to watch in open water swimming. She didn’t win the Open Water Swimmer of the Year Award that year (it went to Russia’s Larisa Ilchenko, who would win twice more), but she continued to catch our eye with her fierce determination.
