Chinese National Games: Qi Hui Sets Asian Record

JINAN, China, October 20. ANOTHER Asian record took a fall at the Chinese National Games held in Jinan this week.

Coming off a strong effort in the 100 breast, Qi Hui claimed the drug-tainted Asian record of Wu Yanyan in the women's 200 IM. Qi raced to victory in 2:08.32 to crush the former Asian record of 2:09.72 set back in 1997 when Chinese swimming was under heavy scrutiny and penalty for doping. Wu tested positive for steroids in 2000 and her 1997 record has always been considered tainted. Liu Jing (2:10.67) and Zheng Rongrong (2:12.51) placed second and third overall.

Yan Yu claimed the women's 200 free title with a time of 1:56.74, while Song Wenyan took second in 1:57.36. Asian record holder Pang Jiaying wound up third in 1:57.40.

Wu Peng snagged the men's 200 fly title with a 1:54.40 for the win, just missing his Chinese record of 1:54.35 set at the 2008 Beijing Games. Chen Weiwu touched second in 1:55.51, while Chen Yin took third overall in 1:56.36.
