Chinese National Championships: Jiao Liu Yang, Zhou Jiawei Set Asian Records

SHAOXING, China, April 7. THE first two days of swimming at the Chinese National Championships have featured some strong swims from the Asian country.

During the first day of swimming, Zhang Lin clocked a time of 3:42.63 in the men's 400 free, just missing his national record of 3:42.42 as the top effort of the day.

Meanwhile, Jiao Liu Yang clocked an Asian record in the women's 100 fly with a 57.16 on the second day. That swim broke the Chinese record of 57.68 set by Zhou Yafei at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and cleared the Asian record of 57.54 set by Singapore's Li Tao also in Beijing.

In a rough Internet translation, Jiao Yang told Chinese Swimming officials that she had spent the previous three weeks in altitude training, and had improved her strength but had been working to improve her endurance.

In the men's 50 fly, Zhou Jiawei posted a time of 23.43 to set an Asian record of his own. The time cleared his Chinese record of 23.63 be last September, and beat the Asian record of 23.60 set by Kohei Kawamoto in Niigata in September 2008.

In other action, Qi Hui won the 200 IM title in 2:11.10. Notably, Chinese swimming star Wu Peng had to sit out the meet due to fractures, but told Chinese Swimming officials that he should be ready to swim at the world championships with no problem.
