Chinese Long Course Nationals: Zhang Fenglin Lowers National Record in 200 Back

RIZHAO, China, August 31. THE first national record of the meet fell during the men's 200 back during the third day of swimming at the Chinese Long Course Nationals.

Zhang Fenglin clocked a time of 1:57.86 to win the men's 200 back, and clipped Ouyang Kunpeng's 2005 national record of 1:57.91 in the process. That swim moved Zhang up to 16th in the world rankings. According to a source on scene, meet officials stopped the meet to interview Zhang after the record, and the local television has continued to repeat the interview nationwide throughout the day. Cheng Feiyi took second in 2:01.18, while Wang Chengxiang placed third in 2:01.27.

Gao Chang reclaimed the top spot in the world in the women's 50 back with a scorching time of 27.54. She previously shared the top-ranked time in the world with teammate Zhao Jing when the duo posted 27.72s in April. Aliaksandra Herasimenia, however, surpassed those times with a 27.64 at the European Championships. Gao's time this evening put her back on top. Zhao took second in 27.74, while Xu Tianlongzi placed third in 28.33, short of her 11th-ranked 28.28 from the Mare Nostrum series.

Jiao Liuyang barely missed lowering her top-ranked time in the women's 200 fly with a strong effort of 2:05.61. She set the world best with a 2:05.46 at April's Chinese Nationals. Zhu Jiani finished second in 2:08.24 to move to 14th in the world, while Zheng Rongrong placed third in 2:09.26.

Li Xuanxu moved from 10th in the world to sixth in the women's 400 free with a winning time of 4:05.41. That time edged her previous season best of 4:05.77 set in April. Shao Yiwen touched second in 4:09.46 to move to 24th in the world, while Liu Jing earned third in 4:10.15.

Xie Zhi captured the men's 100 breast in 1:01.52, while Ma Xiang took second in 1:01.86. Chen Cheng and Wang Shuai tied for third with matching 1:02.31s.

Lu Zhiwu topped the men's 50 free in 22.35, while Shi Yungqiang took second in 22.58. Shi Tengfei wound up third in 22.64.

In relay action, Shanghai won the men's 800 free relay in 7:18.20. Jiangsu took second in 7:20.78, while Tianjin placed third in 7:24.48.
