IRVINE, California, August 1. TODAY’S preliminary competition at the USA Swimming junior nationals will feature some of the nation’s top teenagers battling for spots in one of the eight lanes for the championship final, or several spots available for the B and C finals.

Today’s events include the women’s and men’s 400 freestyle, as well as the women’s and men’s 100 butterfly.

Sierra Schmidt, the winner of the women’s 800 free, will be looking for the distance double tonight. Townley Haas will show off his diversity one day after winning the 100 free final, aiming for a 400 free victory today.

How many ladies will break the 1:00 barrier in the 100 fly prelims? Michelle Cefal is the only swimmer seeded in the 59-second range with a 59.13, but she could bring along a few others in the race for spots in the final. The men’s 100 fly final will feature a great battle, with Justin Lynch’s meet record of 52.91 on the line.
