Charlotte Swim Coach Jamie Thomas Arrested for Misdemeanor Sexual Misconduct

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, October 1. JAMIE Thomas, the owner and former head coach of New South Swimming in Charlotte, has been temporarily suspended by USA Swimming following an arrest and subsequent charge for misdemeanor sexual misconduct involving a minor.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Thomas was arrested on Sept. 18 in Opelika, Ala., and released on $500 bond. He has since been charged, and has accepted a temporary suspension of his USA Swimming membership pending an emergency National Board of Review hearing by USA Swimming.

“USA Swimming takes all allegations of sexual abuse seriously and reports allegations of inappropriate conduct to the proper authorities,” USA Swimming spokesperson Karen Linhart said.

The Observer further reported that Thomas, the 2010 N.C. Swimming Senior Coach of the Year as well as ASCA Certificate of Excellence award winner, had taken a break from his position as head coach of New South back in July.

No more information is available regarding the offense since it involved a minor.
