CCIW Championships: Day Three

KENOSHA, Wisconsin, February 20. THE 2010 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships ended Saturday night with the Wheaton women winning their 13 th-straight conference title, while the Carthage men claimed their third title in a row and fourth in the last five years.

The Thunder women won with a team score of 816, followed by Carthage (813), Illinois Wesleyan (665), Augustana (297), Rose-Hulman (290), North Central (225) and Millikin (202).

On the men's side, the Red Men won with a team score of 1018.5, followed by Wheaton (777.5), Rose-Hulman (539), Illinois Wesleyan (467.5), Augustana (254.5) and Millikin (190).

Carthage's Amanda Croix (Bradley, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais) was named the Most Valuable Swimmer on the women's side while Carthage's NathanRipley (Middleton, Wis./H.S.) was named the Most Valuable Swimmer on the men's side. Illinois Wesleyan's Mike Kozak (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and Carthage's Michelle Pelka (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Academy) earned outstanding participant distinctions.

Carthage women's coach Beth DeLaRosby and men's coach Greg Earhart won CCIW Coach of the Year honors.

In addition, Wheaton's AJ Provonsha (Yucaipa, Calif./Redlands), Rose-Hulman's Ben Sollman (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) and Augustana's Kyle Waller (DeKalb, Ill./H.S.) earned at-large all-conference honors on the men's side. On the women's side, Wheaton's Sloan Skinner (Dallas, Texas), Illinois Wesleyan's Melissa Graffy (Naperville, Ill./Central) and Millikin's Kaley Wittrock (Jefferson City, Mo./H.S.) earned at-large all-conference distinction.

The night began with Wheaton's Lauren Jurgens (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) achievinig a new CCIW championship meet record of 17:15.22 to win the women's 1,650 freestyle. Teammate Laura Westfall (Neenah, Wis./H.S.) placed second with a time of 18:17.15. Illinois Wesleyan's Chris Betzle (East Moline, Ill./United) won the men's 1,650 freestyle (16:15.05), followed by Wheaton's Carl Sveen (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) (16:25.07).

Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Peterson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) was champion in the women's 200 backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:06.70. Jensena Paul (Portage, Wis./H.S.) of Carthage was second (2:09.43). Carthage's Kyle Drake (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) won the men's 200 backstroke with a meet-record time of 1:50.22. Illinois Wesleyan's Mike Firth (East Moline, Ill./United) finished second (1:54.24).

Croix topped her own meet record of 51.14 in the women's 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 49.88. Wheatons' Moire Yue (Edina, Minn./H.S.) placed second with a time of 52.49. Ripley won the men's 100 freestyle with a time of 46.18, followed by Wheaton's Dan Nahigian (La Canada, Calif./Maranatha) (47.30).

North Central's Katie Stratton (Naperville, Ill.) won the women's 200 breaststroke (2:25.96) while Wheaton's Liz Hartman (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) came in second (2:26.35). Wheaton's Jonathan Nitz (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County) took home the men's 200 breaststroke title with a time of 2:08.62. Carthage's Adam Van Huis (Winneconne, Wis./H.S.) came in second, clocking in at 2:09.57.

Pelka was champion in the women's 200 butterfly (2:05.44), followed by Illinois Wesleyan's Katie McHugh (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) (2:08.09). Kozakwon the men's title with a time of 1:50.87 while Carthage's Doug Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) was second (1:53.69).

The night ended with the men's and women's 400 freestyle relay as Carthage's Sammy Jo Mahler (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West), Alyssa Messina (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park), Amy Mueller (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Croix established a new meet record time of 3:30.79 to win the event.

The Carthage's team of Bob Pellican (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey), Ryan Ortmann (Woodstock, Ill./H.S.), Blake Bendix (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and Ripley won the men's 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.32.
