Catalano Lowers Own Italian Record in 50 Back in Final Day of Italian Championships

LIVORNO, Italy, December 16. DURING the final day of swimming at the Italian Swimming Championships held in Livorno, Italy on Dec. 16, Enrico Catalano shaved .04 seconds off his Italian record in the 50 back with a winning time of 26.08. That time lowered his standard of 26.12 previously set on March 26, 2006.

Morning Session
Women's 50 Butterfly
Elena Gemo picked off Cristina Maccagnola, 27.20 to 27.36, to win the 50 fly title. Meanwhile, Ambra Migliori finished third in 28.07.

Men's 50 Backstroke
Enrico Catalano set the Italian national record in the sprint back by winning in 26.08. That time lowered his standard of 26.12 previously set on March 26, 2006. Mirco Di Tora helped push him with a second-place time of 26.30, while Simone Manni finished third in 26.44.

Women's 200 IM
Francesca Segat took home gold in the 200 IM by touching in 2:17.41, while Veronica Massari placed second in 2:18.60. Caterina Brighi rounded out the podium in 2:19.17.

Men's 400 IM
Italian national record holder Luca Marin cruised in to win the 400 IM with a time of 4:17.74, while Alessio Boggiatto finished second in 4:20.23. Federico Turrini turned in a third-place time of 4:20.25.

Women's 50 Breaststroke
Roberta Panara fell .23 seconds off the national record by clocking a 31.96 to win the one-lap breaststroke. Chiara Boggiatto took second in 32.54, while Ombretta Plos placed just behind in 32.64.

Men's 50 Freestyle
Dead heats were all the rage in the freestyle splash and dash. Filippo Magnini and Federico Bocchia tied for the title in 22.93, while Michele Scarica and Giovanni Rossi posted matching third-place 22.98s.

Women's 400 Freestyle
Federica Pellegrini notched a win in the 400 free by hitting the wall in 4:09.32. Flavia Zoccari took second in 4:15.98, while Renata Fabiola Spagnolo claimed third in 4:18.64.

Men's 800 Freestyle
Gabriele Zancanaro stopped the clock in 8:05.60 to win the 800 free, while Luca Ferretti finished second in 8:07.87. Davide Sitti placed a distant third in 8:14.41.

Afternoon Session
Women's 100 Backstroke
Elena Gemo came back and doubled up on the day with a 100 back win in the second session by touching in 1:02.53. Caterina Brighi finished second in 1:04.02, while Romina Armellini clocked a third-place 1:04.13.

Men's 100 Butterfly
Mattia Nalesso touched out Rudy Goldin, 53.69 to 53.71, to win the 100 fly event, while Matteo Salomoni took third in 54.47.

Women's 200 Butterfly
Caterina Giacchetti pulled out the win in 2:10.20, while Paola Cavallino touched second in 2:12.14. Alessia Filippi closed out the top three in 2:14.32.

Men's 200 Backstroke
Mattia Aversa took the four-lap backstroke event in 2:00.06, while Sebastiano Ranfagni picked up second just behind in 2:00.23. Luca Marin earned bronze in 2:01.59.

Women's 200 Breaststroke
Italian record holder Chiara Boggiatto took the title going away in 2:30.19, while teammate Eleonora Mino finished second in 2:32.21. Silvia Rossi took third in 2:33.81.

Men's 100 Breaststroke
Edoardo Giorgetti nabbed gold in the two-lap breast with a time of 1:01.37 to beat out second-place finisher Mattia Pesce's 1:01.88. Michele Vancini picked up third in 1:02.36.

Women's 100 Freestyle
Cristina Chiuso easily won the 100 free in 55.30, while Marialaura Simonetto finished second in 56.99. Roberta Panara closed out the podium in 57.20.

Men's 200 Freestyle
Filippo Magnini held off teammate Massimiliano Rosolino, 1:48.21 to 1:48.83, to win the 200 free and close down the Italian Championships. Meanwhile, Andrea Busato placed third in 1:49.78.
