Cashion, Caverly Win on Day 3 of TYR Meet of Champions

MISSION VIEJO, June 22. COURTNEY Cashion wanted to show her coach she's a sprinter, pure and simple.

Kristen Caverly wanted to prove she's still queen of U.S. 400 IMers.

And several members of Canada's Commonwealth Games team that will compete next month in Manchester were looking for a good final "tune-up."

All accomplsihed their goals on the third day of competition here at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions this evening — and more.

Cashion, who swims for Coach Dave Salo's Novaquatics team and was named Southern California girls' prep Swimmer of the Year by both the LA Times' Orange County edition and the Orange County Register for her 50-100 free wins at last month's CIF Championships, won the 50 free in a pr 26.32 to Canada's Laura Pomeroy's 26.34.

Cashion knocked three tenths of her 26.6+ from this spring's U.S. Nationals time, and said she was pleased with her win and her time. "That's great. I'm on a pretty good pace for summer nationals. Now maybe my coach'll put me back in the sprint group."

After clocking a 2:10 in the 200 free at the spring championships, NOVA coach Salo moved Cashion — who'll be a junior this fall at Irvine High — back into the team's middle-distance group. However, he may have second thoughts as not only did Cashion win the 50 free but won the bonus final of the 200 free as well in a pr 2:04.43.

Well, Mr. Salo, is she now back in the sprint group?

"I think we'll leave things as they are," the coach decided.

Cashion also anchored Irvine High School's record-setting 200 yard medley relay that twice broke the national mark after having had its record from last season broken earlier this year by Ohio's Anderson High.

Irvine's Vaqueroes got the record back at the CIF Relays in April, then made it two-for-two at the CIF Championships in Belmont Plaza the second weekend
of May.

Caverly, who last year set a national prep record in the 200 yard individual medley, won a pair of races
tonight — the 200 breast (2:32.74) and the 400 IM (4:51.10) with Canada's Liz Warden (4:52.07) taking the silver in the medley.

A triple national champion who'll attend Stanford this fall, Caverly graduated from San Clemente High on Thursday, attended Grad Night (which lasted until 5:30 AM!!!) and passed on swimming yesterday.

But she was in fine form today. The Nellie's Gail Saddleback Valley/Cardinal-to-be trailed AFOX's Emily Mason — who on Friday won the 200 fly and 400 free — by three seconds after the opening fly leg of the
400 IM. But a strong backstroke leg boosted her into the lead after 200 meters and she was never headed.

"The 400 IM never felt so bad," Caverly said. "I was praying for the wall."

Caverly's 200 breast pr is 2:29.11 from the 2000 Olympic Trials and her career-best in the 400 IM is 4:43.09 from last summer's U.S. Nationals at Clovis.

Trojan Swim Club's Lindsay Benko, who set the world-record in the 200 free (1:54.07) at the Short Course World Championships in Moscow last April, won her
specialty here (2:01.87). She had previously won the 100 free Friday night.

Benko, a member of Uncle Sam's 800 meter free Olympic gold medal-winning relay team at Sydney, has a pr of 1:58.86 leading off the 800 free relay at the '99 Pan-Pacs in Sydney — No. 3 on the all-time U.S. list.

Look for her to make a run at Nicole Haislett's decade-old American Record of 1:57.90 that won the former Florida Gator the Olympic gold at Barcelona — perhaps at this summer's U.S. Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale or even at next month's Janet Evans Invitational in her home pool at USC.

* * * * *

Canada made its presence known via wins from Mark Johnson (200 free, 1:51.94) and Keith Beavers (400 IM, 4:24.97). And the University of British Columbia's men's 800 free relay squad — with Brian Johns leading off in the fastest split of the meet (1:51.53) — set a record en route to the gold with its 7:27.49 clocking.

The old record was a 7:36.85 by Mark Schubert's Trojan Swim Club from Y2K.

Johnson has a pr of 1:48.90 from last year's World Championship semis and will be after the Canadian Record of 1:48.50 at Manchester. Beavers' IM pr is a 4:22.55 that won him gold at the Sydney International
Youth Festival meeting in January of last year at the Olympic Pool.

Other winners included former Cal All-America Nuk Sirisanont (200 breast, 2:21.09 to Canada's Brian Johns' 2:22.79); this season's NCAA 50 free champ
Roland Schoeman (University of Arizona) leading a 1-2 Wildcat sweep of the 50 free (22.91 to Ryk Neethling's 23.30); and the British Columbia Dolphins taking the women's 800 free relay (8:19.88) to Trojan SC's 8:21.13.

Trojan Joanna Fargus, who'll be looking for golds in the backstrokes at Manchester (she represents Great Britain internationally) led off for Team Trojan in a fine 2:04.63. Benko swam her third leg in 2:02.16.

Maybe not this year and maybe not next, but before she's done look for Benko to perhaps threaten Janet Evans' world and American standard in the 400 free
(4:03.85). Her pr is a 4:08.75, also from the '99 Pan-Pacs.

Evans' time won her the gold at Seoul 14 years ago. She also has history's No. 2 clocking, a 4:04.53 from the Pan-Pacs in Tokyo the following year.

Only Brooke Bennett (4:05.80 and Sydney Olympic champ) plus Diana Munz (pr 4:07+) rank ahead of Benko among currently active American women.
