Numerous Career Bests Highlight Carolina College Invitational

The annual Carolina College Invitational was Feb. 5-7 in Chapel Hill. Duke, NC State, North Carolina, James Madison, Towson, William and Mary, and Virginia Tech were in attendance. The meet was not scored.

Day One

North Carolina’s Zhada Fields won the women’s 500 free, and NC State’s John Poff won the men’s event (4:24.90). The Tar Heels went 1-2-3 in the women’s 200 IM, led by Rachel Canty (2:00.19). NC State’s Geoffrey Carter took the men’s 200 IM (1:48.93).

Duke’s Kathryn Eckhart touched the wall first in the women’s 50 free (23.08), and the Tar Heel’s James Casey (20.52) just out touched the Blue Devils’ Benedict Parfit in the men’s 50 free.

Day Two

North Carolina’s Kendall Surhoff (4:16.39) and Luke Lechner (3:52.46) both dominated the women’s and men’s 400 IM, respectively, each winning by over four seconds.

NC State took the top two spots in the women’s 100 fly, led by Natalie Labonge (52.47) who also broke the Wolfpack’s program record. NC State’s Jon Burkett won the men’s event (46.63), and later won the men’s 100 back (47.48).

North Carolina’s Zhada Fields was the only swimmer under 1:50 in the women’s 200 free (1:46.92), winning my nearly four seconds. Duke’s Alex Pena (1:38.82) just out touched NC State’s Scott Johnson (1:38.86) in the men’s 200 free.

The Wolfpack men went 1-2-3 in the men’s 100 breast, led by Carter (54.55). Canty won the women’s event (1:00.93), and NC State’s Caroline Estep touched first in the women’s 100 back (54.84).

Day Three

NC State took the top two spots in both the women’s and men’s 1650. Allie Fogleman (16:34.30) narrowly beat teammate Anna Jahns (16:34.77), while Mason Revis (15:29.62) won the men’s event over teammate Poff (15:39.39).

Estep was the only person under 2:00 in the women’s 200 back, winning with a time of 1:58.61. NC State’s Parker Campbell won the men’s 200 back (1:46.74).

Eckhart won the women’s 100 free (50.14) to follow up her win in the 50 free on Friday. North Carolina’s Christian Caveness won the men’s 100 free (44.91) to Duke’s Adriann Venter (44.92).

Canty won her third event of the weekend, claiming the women’s 200 breast (2:12.23) by over five seconds. Carter also won his third individual event, taking first in the men’s 200 breast (1:59.76).

The Tar Heels swept the women’s 200 fly, led by Andi Mack (1:59.93). North Carolina continued their butterfly dominance as Thomas Bilden won the men’s 200 fly (1:48.48).

Duke, NC State, and North Carolina will face off again next at the 2016 ACC Championships in Greensboro.
