Carmel High School Posts Clean Sweep of National Public School Relay Records

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 15. AT the Indiana State High School Championships being held at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI, the Carmel High School girls squad just broke the national high school record in the 200-yard medley relay, then followed it up with a public school mark in the 200-yard free relay. Carmel then locked down its 28th straight state title with a public school record in the 400-yard free relay.

The foursome of Hanna House, Alex Clarke, Veronica Burchill and Amy Bilquist chased down the state title with a blazing time of 1:40.83. Splits were unavailable. That swim pushed the public school record into the 1:40s, downing Holland’s 1:41.01 from 2011 that featured a blazing 24.66 backstroke split from Courtney Bartholomew.

Carondelet’s overall and independent school record of 1:40.73 from 2011 still remains as the top high school swimmer ever in the event.

Carmel’s Amy Bilquist (22.52), Claire Adams (22.66), Hanna House (23.31) and Veronica Burchill (22.88) clocked a 1:31.37. That swim blasted a second and a half off Carmel’s public school mark of 1:32.75 set in 2009. Baylor School’s 1:31.18, sparked by a 22.27 from Kristin Vredeveld, still stands as the overall and independent standard.

Carmel closed out the night with another national public school record as Veronica Burchill (50.46), Katie Lemen (51.74), Kendall Smith (50.30) and Claire Adams (48.70) raced their way to a 3:21.20 in the 400-yard free relay. That swim demolished the public school mark of 3:22.85 set by Hershey in 2011. Carondelet still holds the overall and independent mark with a 3:20.42 from last year.

Head coach Chris Plumb has his squad firing on all cylinders, having already knocked down a handful of state records during prelims. Overall, every single one of Plumb’s swimmers made it into finals today as the team guns for its 28th consecutive team title.
