Cardinal Men Defeat Pacific 144-107 In Dual Meet Competition

PALO ALTO, CA, January 16. The Stanford men's swimming team, newly voted #1 in the College Coaches (CSCAA)dual meet poll, improved to 3-0 on the dual meet season with a 144-107 victory today over Pacific at the Avery Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal recorded the top time in 15 of 16 events on the afternoon.

Stanford began with a 1-2 finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Jayme Cramer, Ricky Eddy, Ben Wildman-Tobriner and Kyle Ransom turned in the top time of 1:30.02. They were followed by teammates Matt McDonald, Nick Wolfe, Hongzhe Sun and Peter Carothers who touched the wall in 1:33.15.

Sophomore Andy Grant won the 1000 freestyle style clocking in a 9:15.57. He was followed by freshman Daniel Beal (9:34.81) and Pacific's Brian Lamar (9:47.16). Stanford finished 1-2-3 in the 200 yard freestyle. Sophomore Shaun Phillips claimed victory with a season-best time of 1:39.84. Junior Michael McLean took second in 1:40.29 while freshman Noa Sakamoto was third (1:43.11).

The Cardinal placed 1-2 in the 100 yard backstroke as senior captain Jayme Cramer (48.95) edged fellow senior co-captain Matt McDonald (51.24) for top honors.

It was another 1-2-3 finish for Stanford in the 100 yard breaststroke. Junior Ricky Eddy recorded a first place finish, clocking in at 55.90. He was followed by freshman Karl Boehringer (57.53) and sophomore Hongzhe Sun (58.56).

In the 200 yard butterfly freshman swimmer Daniel Beal captured first, touching the wall in a season-best 1:48.87. Fellow frosh Peter Carothers placed third in a time of 1:52.90.

Andy Grant picked up his second win of the day in the 50 freestyle, turning in a season-best time of 20.93. Junior Tobias Oriwol was third (21.66) for the Cardinal.

Senior Jayme Cramer also recorded his second victory with a win in the 100 yard freestyle (46.28). Senior Gary Marshall was third (48.53). In the 200 yard backstroke, Andy Grant garnered his third win on the afternoon, clocking in at a seaon-best 1:47.50. He was followed by teammate Shaun Phillips who touched the wall in 1:52.65.

Junior Nick Wolf won the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:05.38. He was followed by junior Mark Stephens (2:06.85) and junior Ricky Eddy (2:07.14) to help Stanford to the top three spots.

In the 500 yard freestyle, Stanford's Kevin McLean turned in the top time of 4:31.82 to lead the field. He edged teammate Tobias Oriwol (4:31.94) for the fastest time. Stanford freshman Daniel Beal recorded the best time in the 100 yard butterfly, clocking in at 49.37. Teammate Ben Wildman-Tobriner had the second-fastest time at 50.16.

The 400 IM was won by Pacific's Krzsztof Zoldac in a time of 3:54.29, edging Stanford's Tobias Oriwol (3:57.91). The final event of the day was the 200 yard freestyle relay. The Cardinal team of Peter Carothers, Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Matt Crowe and Hongzhe Sun had the fastest time in the pool at 1:23.36 to beat Pacific's 1:24.15.
