Cancer Strikes Another World-Class Swimmer; Jade Edmistone

BRISBANE, Australia, December 16. ACCORDING to an article in the Courier Mail, Australian breaststroke ace Jade Edmistone revealed a private fight against cancer – news that brings the swimming community its second high-profile cancer fight with Eric Shanteau beating testicular cancer into submission this summer.

According to the article, Edmistone went to the doctor for a routine Pap smear that led to the discovery that she had cancer. She has since had surgery to remove the disease.

"The only reason I found out was I missed out on the Olympic team," Edmistone told the Courier Mail, "I thought it would be a good reason to go and get a vaccine for cervical cancer because I had a bit of time off from swimming, and if there were any side-effects it wouldn't matter as much. So I went in, did that and had a Pap smear at the same time. It was about a week later that the doctor rang and said I needed to go and see him. It was very lucky that things happened the way they did and I was able to find out before it spread."

Edmistone has since returned her focus to training for the 50 breaststroke event for Rome, and may remain in the sport if that event is added to the Olympic Games program in 2012 as requested by FINA.
