Olympic medalist Katerine Savard is withdrawing from next month’s Commonwealth Games for health reasons.

Savard, a two-time Olympian and multiple international medalist who turns 25 in May, has qualified for every senior national team since 2010. The Pont-Rouge, Quebec native plans to compete at Canadian Swimming Championships April 5-8 in Montreal. She will re-focus her training for July’s Canadian Swimming Trials in hopes of returning to the national team for the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo in August.

“This has been a difficult decision,” Savard said. “Representing my country has been the thing that I am the most proud of and I hope to be able to do it again.”

Savard is the reigning gold medalist in the 100 fly from the 2014 Commonwealth Games and also won a bronze for Team Canada in the 4×100 medley relay. She set a Games Record in the 100 fly in 2014 at 57.40 in 2014.

The Commonwealth Games are set to begin Thursday, April 5 in Gold Coast, Australia, and will last through the 10th.
