Canada World Championships Trials: Thomas Kindler, Annamay Pierse, Scott Dickens Set Canadian Records

MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada, July 9. THREE more Canadian national records took a tumble at the Canadian World Championships Trials held in Montreal this evening.

Thomas Kindler cleared his national record in the men's 50 fly with a time of 23.66. The performance beat his 23.81 set back in 2007. Joe Bartoch placed second in 24.03 with Eric Cantin taking third in 24.05.

Annamay Pierse broke her national record in the women's 100 breast twice throughout the day. First, she turned in a 1:06.77 during prelims to break her 1:07.31 set in June. She then won the title in 1:05.74 for the second-fastest time in the world this year behind only Rebecca Soni's American record of 1:05.34 set earlier in the evening. Both swimmers cleared the previous top time in the world this year of 1:05.80 held by Russia's Yuliya Efimova.

Amanda Reason, who set the women's 50 breast world record last night, took second in 1:06.53, while Martha McCabe placed third in 1:08.59.

Scott Dickens wiped out his second Morgan Knabe Canadian breaststroke record in as many nights. Dickens, who claimed the national mark in the 50 breast last night, won the men's 100 breast in 1:00.23. The effort beat Knabe's 1:00.70 set in 2003. Mathieu Bois (1:00.55) and Paul Kornfeld (1:00.65) took second and third.

Heather Maclean touched out Victoria Poon for the women's 100 free title, 54.68 to 54.94. Genevieve Saumur (55.12) and Julia Wilkinson (55.35) finished third and fourth for relay spots at Worlds.

Brent Hayden claimed the men's 100 free crown in 48.16, while Joel Greenshields (48.39), Colin Russell (48.92) and Stefan Hirniak (49.98) cleared 50 seconds and comprised the rest of the relay spots for Worlds.

Alexa Komarnycky turned in a 4:40.10 in the women's 400 IM for the win, while Tanya Hunks placed second in 4:41.17. Barbara Jardin completed the top three in 4:43.76.

Jordan Hartney topped the men's 400 IM in 4:17.52 with Andrew Ford finishing second in 4:23.00. Andres McIntyre wound up third in 4:24.45.

In an exciting finish, Kendra Chernoff touched out Jennifer Beckberger, 27.20 to 27.27, for the women's 50 fly. Katerine Savard snared third in 27.35.

Ryan Cochrane clinched the men's 800 free crown in 7:48.33, while Sean Penhale (8:03.51) and Jeremy Bagshaw (8:06.70) placed second and third.
