Australia’s Cameron McEvoy had a strong race on his hands in the 200 freestyle semifinal at the 2015 FINA world championships, with Great Britain’s James Guy pushing the pace hard after 100 meters. It was his second hard 200 freestyle of the day, which he said took its toll in the semifinal.

“I got through to the final, and I think that was the toughest part of the 200 series for me,” McEvoy said. “Today was the hardest day I’m going to have the whole meet.”

McEvoy laughed that he’s going to have “a Ryan Lochte and Sun Yang sandwich” in the final, referring to being in a lane between the two. He noted the performances of Lochte and Sun in the history of the sport, saying “I’m excited to be in that final.”

During the interview, Katinka Hosszu broke the world record in the 200 IM, but McEvoy recovered to talk more about the performances of the field, including how Guy began to break away at the halfway point.

“I had to be careful not to go with him all the way,” he said. “I had to stick with what I was trained to do and what I was meant to do because we are two different athletes.”
