Calvin v. Wayne State

DETROIT, Michigan, January 19. THE Wayne State men's swimming squad defeated Calvin College, 135-86, at the Matthaei Aquatic Center, marking the third straight dual meet triumph for the Warriors.

WSU won nine straight swims to clinch the victory, highlighted by Sean Smith's (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) victory in the 100 backstroke, which eclipsed the NCAA "B" qualifying standard and missed setting a pool record by .05 seconds.

The 400 medley relay combination of Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Brett Salogar (Bay City, Mich./Western), and Tim Giblin (Midland, Mich./Midland Dow) came in first place (3:37.93), followed by the foursome of Alex Guymer (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), Jay Koehler (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore), Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson), and Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) in second (3:42.49).

In 1650 free, James Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) finished first (16:59.65), Jeff Marshall (Berkley, Mich.) placed third (18:16.84), and David Fontecchio (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) touched fourth (18:39.89).

Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) won the 200 free (1:48.23), followed by A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) in second (1:51.11) and Brad Irwin (Sterling Hts., Mich.) in third (1:52.24).

In the 50 free, Giblin led the pack (22.10) with Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil) in third (22.37) and Jamal Roberts (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) in fourth (24.09).

Wayne State swept the top three spots in the next three events – the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, and the 100 free.

Matt Carlson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) won the 400 IM (4:18.58) with Davidson (4:30.26) and Marshall (4:36.30) in tow. Bedran (52.74), Oliveira 53.89, and Ben Dueweke (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) (55.02) swept the 100 fly, and the trio of Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) (48.91), Salogar (50.86), and Giblin (51.32) took the 100 free.

After Smith won the 100 back and earned his "B" cut with Guymer finishing second (57.96), the Warriors secured the victory with a one-two-three finish in the 500 free. Ekleberry led the way (4:59.24) with Rzepa second (5:04.33) and Shields third (5:09.28).

The Wayne State women's swimming and diving team earned a 132-103 dual meet victory over Calvin College.

Sophomores Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) each garnered an NCAA "B" qualifying standard, as the Warriors won nine of the first 10 events to clinch the overall victory.

The 400 medley relay of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Hogle, Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland), and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) took first place with a time of 4:05.59.

After Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) won the 1650 freestyle (17:55.20), Hogle earned her "B" cut in the 200 free, winning in a time of 1:57.32. Abbey Green (Dearborn, Mich.) came in second (2:00.42).

Wayne State took the top three spots in in 50 free, with Nicole Knoblock (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) placing first (25.75), Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) second (26.10), and Zalewska third (26.25).

The Warriors also swept the top three finishes in the 400 individual medley. St. Andrew made her "B" cut with a first-place time of 4:40.25, followed by Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) in second (4:48.44) and Whitney Baker (Trenton, Mich.) in third (4:54.07).

Erika Barczak (Williamston, Mich.) and Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) placed first (264.30) and second (241.50), respectively, in the one-meter diving event. WSU also went one-two in the 100 fly, as Zalewska touched first (1:01.53) followed by Laura Leix (1:01.75).

In the 100 free, Rakouth came in second (56.20) and Danaher placed third (56.39).

Franklin won the 100 back (1:01.21), and WSU secured the win with three of the top four spots in the 500 free. St. Andrew won the swim (5:10.69), Green took second (5:26.86) and Baker finished fourth (5:33.59).
