California vs. Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, November 6. CALIFORNIA concluded a busy stay in Colorado by defeating host Colorado State, 124.5-104.5, on Saturday at Moby Pool. The Golden Bears (2-1) trained at the Olympic Training Center on Nov. 5 in Colorado Springs and then beat the Rams (2-4) and celebrated head coach Teri McKeever's birthday today.

Cal won 10 of 13 events against Colorado State.

"We had a great time at the training center," McKeever said. "Today Caitlin did a really nice job, and so did Shelley Harper, Samantha Shellem, Katherine Raatz and Colleen Fotsch. It's been a really productive trip, from training, information gathering and competition. Swimming at altitude presents different challenges, both physically and emotionally. And they won on my birthday, so that's cool."

Leverenz, the 2010 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, was the only Bear to win multiple individual events, taking the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:03.31 and 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:02.55.

Fotsch, a junior, captured the first event of the day, the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 57.09. Freshman teammate Melissa Bates posted a time of 1:05.17 to win the 100-yard breaststroke. Cal senior Katie Kastes claimed the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 57.67.

Senior Sara Sun then produced Cal's top finish in the 1000 free, taking second with a time of 10:45.94, behind CSU's Jennifer Lamb (10:33.44).

Cal swept the top three spots in the 200 free, with junior Liv Jensen winning (1:53.08), Leverenz finishing second (1:54.27) and senior Erica Dagg taking third (1:56.08).

The 50 free was up next, though Jensen, the defending NCAA champion in the 50 free, did not swim in the sprint. CSU's Samantha Dole edged Cal freshman Nathalie Lindborg in the race, 23.95-23.97.

After Leverenz picked her two wins, Raatz claimed victory in the 100 free (52.09). Freshman Mikkel-Ane Stipe picked up the Bears' best placement in the 200 backstroke, taking third (2:07.01) as the Rams' Breann Fuller won (2:04.01).

Cal closed the meet by winning the last three events. Shellem, a freshman, was victorious in the 500 free (5:09.27), Harper, a junior, claimed the 200 breaststroke (2:24.91) and the Cal A relay of freshman Deborah Roth, freshman Cindy Tran, Lindborg and Fotsch captured the 200-free relay (1:34.77).

There was no diving at the meet, as Cal's divers are competing in the Trojan Diving Invitational today.

Cal next swims in the Arena Invitational to be held Nov. 18-20 in Long Beach, Calif.
