PROVO – BYU head coach John Brooks today announced Tyce Routson has been named head diving coach for the swimming and diving team.

“I’m thrilled to have Tyce be a part of the Cougar family,” Brooks said. “He has gained respect all over the country, which will help him in recruiting, and I look forward to continue the fruitful diving history at BYU with what Tyce brings to the program.”

A four-time NCAA champion and 11-time All-American in springboard and platform diving at the University of Miami, Routson comes to BYU from the Mission Viejo Nadadores Diving Team where he is currently the national and international team director.

“I’m very excited to be working with coach Brooks,” Routson said. “We have the same goals for the team and through our attention to detail and to the student-athletes we can put BYU on the national stage.”

Routson won three NCAA titles in the 10-meter platform and won another in the 3-meter springboard during his college career. He was named the 1997 NCAA Diver of the Year before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 1997-1999. After returning, he won his fourth NCAA title in the 10-meter platform in 2000. He also was a finalist at the Olympic trials in 1996 and 2000, finishing as high as sixth.

Routson graduated from Miami with a bachelor’s degree in international finance and marketing and was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

Routson has coached diving at Fullerton College and with the SoCal Divers and Arizona Rippers Dive Club. He will replace longtime head diving coach Keith Russell, who retired at the end of the 2014-15 season after 23 years leading BYU’s divers.

“I have known coach Russell since I was 12 years old,” Routson said. “I spoke to him many times at meets. I’m very familiar with what he’s done with the program. He’s done something that I’ll continue to look at and maintain.”

Routson currently resides in Las Flores, California, with his wife Allison and their three daughters.
