BYU Announces Four Signees

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, November 25. LAST week coach Stan Crump announced the signing of four new high school swimmers and one diver that will join the Cougars for the 2004-05 campaign.

These new swimmers will add depth to the butterfly event, which has been a weakness for BYU this season.

"With these swimmers we have really helped our team in the butterfly events, which is a need for us," Crump said. "All of them are solid academically and great student-athletes. We expect to sign several more swimmers and divers during this early signing week."

Three of the four swimmers, Ashley Kleinman, Tara Bradshaw and Carly Smith are all from Utah.

Kleinman hails from Highland, Utah and swims for Lone Peak High School and HAST Swim Club. She swims in the freestyle and butterfly events. She was named a high school All-American in the 100 butterfly and is a U.S. Sectionals and Jr. Nationals qualifier and finalist.

"Ashley swims the butterfly, which is one of our needs this year," Crump said. "I love her versatility. She can swim any freestyle event from the 50 to 1650 well and is not afraid of any of them."

Bradshaw is from South Jordan, Utah and swims for Bingham High School and the Kearns Youth Aquatic team. She swims the IM and breaststroke and is the current 5A champion in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bradshaw is a U.S. Zone and Sectionals qualifier.

"Tara is a very well-coached, talented swimmer who is going to get much better in college where the events she does well in are part of the format," Crump said.

Smith, an American Fork, Utah native, swims with Kleinman for the HAST Swim Club and also for American Fork High School. Smith swims the breaststroke and IM events and can also swim some middle distance freestyle events. She was a finalist in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM last year at the 4A swim meet and is a U.S. Zone and Sectional Championships qualifier.

"Smith will immediately add depth to our stroke group and has the talent to help us in the middle distance and distance freestyle events," Crump said.

Angela Goodson from Blue Springs, Mo., and Angela Nelson from San Antonio, Texas also signed with the Cougars.

"Angela is one of the most highly decorated swimmers ever to come to BYU," Crump said. "She is a great kid, a good student and is extremely versatile, in that she also swims all freestyle events from the 500 on down."

Goodson is a high school All-American in the 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly and 200 IM. She was named the Missouri High School Athlete of the Meet in 2002 and 2003. Goodson also was a qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Trials and was selected by Speedo as the "National High School Swimmer of the Year" from Missouri.

Nelson is the only diver to sign with the Cougars so far. She competes for Reagan High School and the San Antonio Divers Club. She is a high school All-American, and she competed in the 2003 U.S. Junior National Diving Championships.

"Angela will be a great diver and a good representative of BYU," diving coach Keith Russell said. "She will contribute immediately and is a very important part of our diving future here at BYU.
