Buschschulte Wins 50 Fly on Final Night of German Nationals

BERLIN, May 27. THE final night of the German Nationals came to a close with Antje Buschschulte, known for her backstroke prowess, delivering a victory in the women's 50-meter butterfly. The reigning world champion in the 100 back, Buschschulte won the sprint fly in 26.89, just ahead of the 26.97 effort of Daniela Samulski.

Sandra Volker, a longtime staple at the top of the German charts, outdistanced the competition in the 50 freestyle. A night after watching her world record in the 50 backstroke get wiped from the books, Volker won the one-lap free in 25.56. Dorothea Brandt was the second-place finisher in 25.65 and third place went to Daniela Gotz in 25.87.

In the 50 backstroke, world-record holder Thomas Rupprath could manage only second place to Stev Theloke. Rupprath hit the wall in 25.45, off Theloke's winning pace of 25.39. Steffen Driesen touched second in 25.52. Rupprath, the defending world champ, holds the global standard at 24.80.

In the distance freestyle events, Jana Henke and Christian Hein earned triumphs. Henke took the women's 1,500 free in 16:22.77 while Hein was the winner of the men's 800 free in 7:56.51. Thomas Lurz was second in the 800 free, as he clocked 7:59.23.
