Bucknell At Day One Of Trials/Finals Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, November 17. SOPHOMORE Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) posted an individual win in the 1,650-yard freestyle as the Bucknell men's swimming and diving squad finished up day one of its own Trials/Finals Invitational in second-place out of four teams with 438 points. Towson leads the pack with 588 points, while Binghamton is third with 409 and The College of New Jersey sits fourth with 262.

Trafton recorded the top time of 16 minutes, 12.27 seconds in the 1,650 free, and was one of four Bison who qualified for the "A" final in the 200 free. In the 200 free, senior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) led the Orange and Blue, finishing second in 1:45.51, while sophomore Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) claimed third (1:46.29), Trafton was fifth (1:47.02) and sophomore Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) placed eighth (1:50.76).

Peterman was the runner-up in the 50 free, as well, touching the wall in 21.22. In that event, junior Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) came in sixth with a time of 22.30 and senior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) won the "B" final in 22.10, good for ninth overall.

The 100 back yielded significant points for the Bison with four individuals qualifying for the "A" final. Kawczenski registered Bucknell's top time in the 100 back, finishing as the runner-up in 53.21. Following him were freshman Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) in fifth (54.55), sophomore David Iselin (Potomac, Md./Churchill) in sixth (54.68) and junior Christopher Amato (East Norwich N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) in seventh (54.99).

Senior Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 58.57 and classmate Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) took eighth in 1:01.07. Bennett also qualified for the "A" final in the 200 IM, where he recorded the sixth-place time of 1:59.00.

In the 200 fly, freshman Michael Volpe (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished sixth with a time of 1:59.93 and DeLeon registered a time of 2:01.93, good for eighth, to round out Bucknell's swimmers who qualified for the "A" finals on day one.

In one-meter diving, junior Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) led the way for the Bison as he finished second with a mark of 257.85.

The Orange and Blue captured the runner-up spot in both relays. The squad of Peterman, Kawczenski, Fletcher, and Steadman combined for a time of 1:25.84 in the 200 free relay, while Kawczenski, Bennett, Volpe and Peterman teamed up for a time of 3:29.63 in the 400 medley relay.

Bucknell will continue to compete in the Trials/Finals Invitational tomorrow, Nov. 18, with trials set to begin at 10 a.m. and finals scheduled for 5 p.m., in Kinney Natatorium.
