Buckeye Men Defeat Boilermakers

OLUMBUS, Ohio, November 19. THE No. 14 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team defeated No. 18 Purdue, 171-129, in the Buckeyes last home dual meet of the fall season, Friday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Scarlet and Gray won 10 of the 16 events and set more than 10 season-best times.

The Buckeyes opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of R.J. Lemyre (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Felipe Travesso (So., Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lawrences North), Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) and Matt Voelker (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) recorded the team's fastest time of the season in 1:30.89.

Mark Neiman (Fr., Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) picked up his second consecutive win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching in at 9:15.33. Classmate George Markovic (Fr., Sydney, Australia/St. Ives) stopped the clock next to take second place with a time of 9:20.11.

Doyle recorded his second victory in the 200-yard freestyle for the year in a season-best time of 1:40.00. Stefan Sigrist (Fr., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) finished third in the heat (1:42.25). The time was his fastest of the season. Doyle won a second individual title in the 100-yard freestyle (45.74). Voelker took him the silver in the event with a time of 45.85. Later in the meet, Voelker posted the winning time in the 50-yard freestyle (20.78).

Lemyre also swam a season-best time in the 100-yard backstroke for the win when he finished in 49.89. Lemyre was the only swimmer to complete the race in less than 50 seconds. Lemyre later added another victory, with a win in the 200-yard backstroke. His time of 1:48.69 also was a season-best.

Swimmers in the Buckeye breaststroke division all posted season-best times in the 100-yard breaststroke. Daniel Malnik (Fr., Rishon le-Zion, Israel/Gan-Nahum) and Sam Pelkey (Fr., Munice, Ind./Delta) both swam the race in 57.33 to tie for third place. Travesso finished fourth in 57.67. Malnik was Ohio State's fastest swimmer in the 200-yard distance. He finished third with a time of 2:05.77.

Matthias Sigrist (So., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.84. Teammate Chandler West (Fr., Atlanta, Ga./Chattahoochee) rounded out the Top 3 with his season-best time of 1:51.10 in the event.

The Buckeyes continued to dominate the freestyle events, sweeping the 500-yard freestyle. Neiman swam the race in a season-best time of 4:31.63. Markovic (4:34.02) took the runner-up position while Matthias Sigrist (4:35.31) finished in the bronze-medal spot. The Buckeyes filled two of the Top 3 spots in the 200-yard individual medley. Nate King (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) finished the race second in 1:53.28, while Dan Novak (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothill) rounded out the podium in 1:54.12.

Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash/Cascade Christian) continued his undefeated record on the 3-meter. He won the event with a score of 371.62. Ryan Jefferson (Fr., Madison, Wis./Madison Edgewood) finished behind him in second place (360.62). The pair placed in the Top 3 again on the 1-meter, with Harkness the runner-up (326.17) and Jefferson taking third (308.77).

The Buckeyes ended the meet, going 1-3 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The `A' team of Voelker, Lemyre, Matthias Sigrist and Travesso finished in 3:04.50 for the win, with the `B' team finishing third in 3:07.98.

"Any Big Ten win is good, especially when the school is ranked in the Top 20," Bill Wadley, head swimming coach, said. "They are a good team. I have a lot of respect for their program. I'm excited about the team bonding. We continued to get better at this meet. We still have things to fix to continue improving."

The Buckeyes will return to action Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a road meet at Cleveland State.
