Bruwer Sets Female Record in Crossing Gibraltar Straits

TARIFA, Spain, June 16. SWIMMING across the Gibraltar Straits from Spain to Morocco, South African Carina Bruwer set a record Wednesday for covering the distance in record time for a female. Bruwer negotiated the 16-kilometer stretch in 3:35, two minutes faster than the effort of India’s Bula Chowdhury in 2000.

According to the South African Press Association, the 25-year-old was accompanied by two boats and a support crew from the Gibraltar Straits Swimming Association. Bruwer is the eighth South African to cross the Straits of Gibraltar. Bruwer plans on swimming across the English Channel in August.

"I am absolutely elated,” Bruwer said. "I wanted to break the record, but lost hope when I had 4.3 kilometers left to swim in less than an hour. My support crew (was) fantastic, though, and kept telling me to go for it, as I might be helped by the tide toward Morocco.”
