Bruno Ortiz Leads Michigan to Huge Morning at Prelims

IOWA CITY – Michigan and Ohio State crushed it this morning with 17 and 15 point scorers each qualifying at the Big Ten Men’s Championships.

400 IM

Michigan’s Dylan Bosch (3:42.09) and Indiana’s Steve Schmuhl (3:42.31) both cleared the NCAA A cut in prelims to set up what should be a dynamic battle this evening.

100 fly

Ohio State’s Matt McHugh broke the pool record in the 100 fly with an NCAA A cut time of 45.89.  That swim eclipsed the 46.02 set by Michigan’s Dan Madwed back in 2012, and is within striking distance of Chris Brady’s 2009 meet record of 45.45.

Michigan had a monster event going 2-3-5-6 with Pete Brumm (46.53) and Jeremy Raisky (46.65) leading the way.

200 free

Blake Pieroni, who set IU’s 200-yard free school record with a 1:33.10 leadoff on the 800 free relay on night one, topped qualifying in 1:33.83 this morning.

Ohio State’s Josh Fleagle placed just behind with a 1:33.85, while Anders Nielsen was one of two Wolverines to make the finale with a third-place 1:34.48.

100 breast

Michigan’s Bruno Ortiz blasted his way to a pool record in the 100-yard breast with a 51.77.  That swim downed the 52.34 set by Cody Miller of Indiana in 2012.  Ortiz is also close to Miller’s meet and conference record of 51.50, which would vault him into the top 10 of all time.

Teammate Richard Funk qualifying second in 52.42 with Purdue’s Lyam Dias posting a third-[place 52.72.

100 back

Penn State had a strong 100 back this morning with a 1-2 effort.  Shane Ryan led the way with a 45.78, just off the pool record of 45.56 set by Iowa’s Grant Betulius in December.

Nave Savoy took second for Penn State with a 46.05, while Ohio State’s Matt McHugh placed third in 46.37.
