GREENSBORO – Brooklynn Snodgrass played coy with her competitors this morning, cruising into the final of the women’s 100 backstroke at the USA Swimming nationals in lane two. But the Indiana junior took control from the start, taking her first 100 backstroke national title to go along with her 200 back NCAA title.

Her 51.59 automatically qualifies her for next March’s championships, and is bound to stand as one of the top collegiate times in the nation after this week. UCLA’s Linnea Mack looked like she might have Snodgrass in her sights, surfacing exactly at the 15-meter mark in the final length to touch second with a 51.98. Mack is having a banner meet, setting lifetime bests in every event. Clara Smiddy of Michigan beat out teammate Ali DeLoof for third, 52.36 to 52.40.

Claire Adams of Carmel Siwm Club (52.56), UCLA’s Madison White (53.14), Indiana’s Justine Ress (53.19) and Indiana’s Kennedy Goss (53.27) also swam in the championship final.

Anu Nihipali also broke 53 seconds in winning the B final with a 52.97. Asia Seidt fell just a bit short of that barrier with a runner-up time of 53.06. Erin Voss was third with a 53.37. Grace Ariola took the C final with a 53.97, as Lacey Locke was second with a 54.04 and Caroline Baddock was third with a 54.12.
