Brittany Aoyama, Sam Wicks Double; Boise State Cruises By Oregon State

CORVALLIS – Brittany Aoyama and Sam Wicks each won two individual events and swam on two winning relays Friday night to lead the Boise State women’s swimming and diving team over Oregon State, 178-84. Sammy Harrison picked up two individual wins for Oregon State.

No. 23 Boise State swimming and diving captured 10 of 14 events in Corvallis to register a 178-84 Halloween-night victory at Oregon State.

The win improved the Broncos to 3-0 in dual meets for the year, and marked the third straight win over a Pac-12 school dating back to last season.

“We swam very well tonight. There were some great races and OSU helped raise our level of competition,” said Boise State head coach Kristin Hill. “We had a strong start to the season in our first two dual-meet wins earlier this month against Utah and Idaho, and today we took a big step forward as a team.”

Sophomore Brittany Aoyama became the first Bronco swimmer to post an NCAA B Standard this season when she captured the 100 fly with a time of 54.06. On the night, Aoyama picked up four victories, as in addition to the 100 fly she was first in the 100 free as well as being part of the winning foursomes in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Junior Sam Wicks also finished first in four events Friday night as she and Aoyama both remained perfect with 12 wins in 12 events in 2014. Wicks was also part of the two winning relay teams in addition to capturing individual victories in the 100 back and 50 free, just missing NCAA B Standards in each event by 0.15 and 0.3 of a second, respectively.

The 200 medley relay team of Wicks, Sydney Johansen, Aoyama and Katelyn Martin got the meet started for the Boise State, cruising to a near-four-second win over Oregon State’s top quartet. The next Bronco foursome of Jessica Bottelberghe, Heather Harper, Morgan McClure and Monica Bottelberghe took third with a time of 1:46.86 as Boise State pulled 13 points from the opening event.

Oregon State’s Sammy Harrison captured the 1,000 free in the next event, just one of four events that the Beavers would win. Harrison doubled for the night, also taking the 500 free later on. In the 1,000, the Broncos fought back by securing the next three scoring slots thanks to Blake Balogh, Megan Myers and Emri Moore.

Boise State took control of the meet from there, winning the next six events and outpointing the Beavers 89-31. The run began with Felicity Cann taking the 200 free and was continued with wins in the 100 back (Wicks), 100 breast (Emma Chard), 200 fly (Jessica Bottelberghe), 50 free (Wicks) and 100 free (Aoyama).

After the Beavers were able to reel off three straight wins in the 200 back, 200 breast and 500 free, the Broncos rebounded to end the meet with wins over the final three events. Aoyama got her B Standard in leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Broncos (with Martin and Jessica Bottelberghe finishing second and third, respectively) in the 100 fly, followed by sophomore Whitney Jorgensen scoring her first win of the season with a time of 4:28.90 in the 400 IM.

The quartet of Aoyama, Martin, Johansen and Wicks capped the night with a dominant victory in the 400 free relay, as Wicks tapped in on the anchor leg for a final time of 3:23.68, over seven seconds ahead of the second Bronco team of the Bottelberghe sisters, Harper and McClure (3:31.01).

Boise State’s divers, which got the meet off Friday, return to action next weekend (Nov. 7-9) at the USC Diving Invitational in Los Angeles. The Bronco swimmers see their next action in three weeks, heading to College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational from Nov. 20-22 where they will get an early-season test against some of the top teams in the country in host Texas A&M, Arizona State, LSU, SMU, Stanford and TCU.

“We are looking forward to high-level competition at the Texas A&M Invitational in less than three weeks,” Hill added. “This may be the best we have ever been at this phase of the season, and that’s going to play a big part in our success in a championship format.”

Junior Sammy Harrison continued her outstanding campaign Friday afternoon, as she posted a pair of first place finishes in the Oregon State swim team’s meet against Boise State. Harrison opened her meet by taking first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:09.77, before taking the top spot in the 500 freestyle at 4:50.61. The Henderson, Nev. native also placed second in the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock in 1:51.30.

Junior Amani Amr recorded a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:03.66) and took second in the 100 backstroke (57.33). Sophomore Czsarina Isleta added to her impressive early season results by winning the 200 breaststroke (2:19.57). She also placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.58).

As a team, the Beavers fell to the Broncos 178-84.

Sophomore Brooke Meyer placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:07.51), while freshman Allie Kilroy took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.45). Redshirt-sophomore Claire McLaggan finished third in the 50 freestyle, stopping the clock in 24.30.

Junior Constance Toulemonde finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (53.07), while sophomore Sophie MacEwan took fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.32) and sophomore Andrea Young placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (57.96). Freshman Abby Maricle took fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:08.40) and classmate Corrine Shigeta placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.70).

The Oregon State squad of Amr, Kilroy, Young and McLaggan finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:46.28) and the Beaver team of Harrison, Toulemonde, MacEwan and freshman Noemie Midrez placed third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:32.74).

The Beavers will host their alumni meet tomorrow morning at the Dixon Recreation Center.
