British Nationals Championships: Distance Freestyles Take Center Stage

LIVERPOOL, England, July 12. WHILE there were a few sprint events sprinkled throughout the second day of finals at the British National Open Championships, the longer distance events were mostly on offer.

David Davies began the second set of finals with a victory in the men's 800 free. He clocked a time of 7:50.74, easily beating second-place finisher Daniel Fogg (8:09.21).

In another distance free beatdown, Rebecca Adlington dropped a time of 8:27.86 in the women's 800 free with Camelia Potec taking second in 8:34.67.

The men's 200 free proved to be much closer with Ross Davenport touching out Robert Renwick, 1:49.57 to 1:49.59. Andrew Hunter claimed third in 1:49.73.

Sweden's Anne-Karin Kammerling snatched the women's 50 fly title in 26.95, with France's Sophie De Ronchi taking second in 27.95.

The men's 200 breast followed with Kristopher Gilchrist cruising to a win in 2:12.94 against Andrew Bree's 2:14.19.

Sweden's Hanna Westrin earned the women's 100 breast triumph in 1:09.85, while De Ronchi took second in 1:11.31.

Todd Cooper won the next event, the men's 100 fly, with a time of 53.61, while Andrew Mayor placed second in 53.90 and Michael Rock finished third in 53.94.

Alena Popchanka captured the 100 free sprint crown when she hit the wall in 54.78. Joanne Jackson wound up second in 56.59 with Jessica Sylvester taking third in 57.07.

The men's sprint back came next as Gregor Tait touched in 25.95. Matthew Clay pocketed second in 26.04, with Marco Loughran grabbing third in 26.11.

Ireland's Melanie Nocher garnered the women's 200 back title in 2:12.71, while Georgia Davies (2:14.95) and Sophie Casson (2:17.45) made up the rest of the top three.

The IMs completed the morning final session. James Goddard won the men's 200 IM in 2:03.68, while Hannah Miley captured the women's 400 IM in 4:42.84.
