British National Championships: First Session of Morning Finals Complete

LIVERPOOL, England, July 11. THE first session of morning finals is complete at the British National Open Championships held in Liverpool.

Robert Renwick clinched the men's 400 free title with a time of 3:49.61, just touching out David Davies, who placed second in 3:49.74. Daniel Coombs took third in 3:54.50.

Joanne Jackson followed with a victory in the women's 200 free (1:57.25) with Rebecca Adlington claiming second in 1:58.75. France's Camelia Potec wound up third in 2:00.41.

A trio of sprint events followed with James Gibson touching out Christopher Cook, 28.87 to 28.97, in the men's 50 breast. Matthew Shead claimed third in 29.18. Georgia Davies then took the women's 50 back in 28.82, with Kate Sexton (29.58) and Gemma Spofforth (30.13) touching second and third, respectively. Australia's Jonathon Newton snatched a victory away from France's Fabien Gilot, 22.51 to 22.60, in the men's 50 free with Simon Burnett tying Liam Tancock for third with matching 22.91s.

In the women's 100 fly, Jemma Lowe edged Alena Popchanka, 59.01 to 59.07, while Sweden's Anne-Karin Kammerling took third in 1:00.10.

The men followed with the longer-distance fly with Michael Rock winning the 200 in 1:57.71. Todd Cooper placed second in 2:00.73, while Andrew Mayor finished third in 2:01.33.

Kirsty Balfour walked away with the women's 200 breast title in 2:32.46, while France's Sophie De Ronchi (2:33.45) took second. Deborah Hall then placed third in 2:35.51.

The men's 100 back came down to a close battle with Gregor Tait hitting the wall in 55.32. Marco Loughran finished second in 55.57, while Scott Houston took third in 56.70.

Hannah Miley completed the set of morning finals with a win in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:14.77. Elizabeth Simmonds took second in 2:15.68, while Aimee Willmott rounded out the top three in 2:19.52.
