Brendan Hansen, Sarah Wanezek Named Big 12 Swimmers of the Month

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 18. TEXAS junior All-American Brendan Hansen (Haverford, Pa.) and sophomore All-American Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) were named the Big 12 Swimmers of the Month for December, the Big 12 Conference announced on Wednesday.

The honor is the second of the year for Wanezek, as she also was recognized for her accomplishments in November, while Hansen is receiving the award for the first time this season.

Hansen, a four-time NCAA individual champion in the breaststroke events, led Texas to a first-place finish at the Texas Invitational (Dec. 5-7) by winning three events and finishing runner-up in another. In the breaststroke events, Hansen set meet records in the 100- and 200-yard races with times of 53.24 and 1:55.74, respectively.

Hansen also competed on the UT 400-yard medley relay that set a meet record with a mark of 3:10.17, while the 200-yard medley relay placed second. All four times posted by Hansen were NCAA automatic qualifying marks.

Wanezek, a two-time NCAA All-American, posted four NCAA automatic qualifying times and two NCAA consideration marks en route to winning six events at the Texas Invitational as the UT women captured first place at the meet. Wanezek posted automatic qualifying times in the 50-yard freestyle (22.69), the 100-yard butterfly (52.74), the 100-yard backstroke (54.04) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.47), in addition to turning in consideration times as a member of the 200- (1:40.55) and 400-yard (3:39.71) medley relay teams.

In November, Wanezek was honored as the Big 12 Swimmer of the Month after winning two individual events and four relay events in a tri-meet with nationally-ranked Stanford and Southern Cal. UT freshman Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) was the men's honoree for November.

The Texas men's swimming and diving team returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 9, with a dual meet at Auburn (time to be determined), while the women will face Georgia on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. in Athens, Ga.
