Brazilian Short Course Championships: Cesar Cielo Sweeps Sprint Gold

SAO PAOLO, Brazil, December 3. THE second night of action at the Brazilian Short Course Championships came to a close with Cesar Cielo completing a sprint freestyle sweep.

Cielo crushed the men's 50 free in prelims with a meet-record time of 21.31 before faltering a bit in finals with a winning time of 21.46. Cielo had been gunning for his top-ranked season best of 20.80 set at the Jose Finkel Trophy in September. The win gave Cielo a sweep of the 50 and 100 freestyle events this week. Bruno Fratus finished second in 21.83, while Nicholas Dos Santos wound up third in 21.84.

Felipe Silva tracked down the men's 50 breast meet record in prelims with a 26.71 before turning around and winning the event in finals with a 26.78. Silva's top time this year came with a third-ranked 26.27 from the Jose Finkel Trophy. Joao Luiz Jr. touched a close second in 26.94, while Felipe Lima rounded out the top three in 27.14.

Tatiane Sakemi won the women's 50 breast in 31.56 after setting the meet record with a time of 31.46 during prelims. Sakemi moved up to 21st in the world rankings with her prelim swim. Juliana Marin finished second in 32.19, while Ana Carvalho picked up third in 32.43.

Andre Schultz won the men's 200 back in a meet-record 1:53.62. Schultz improved to 15th in the world rankings with the swim. Leonardo Santos took second in 1:54.04, while Leonardo De Deus finished third in 1:55.58.

Gabriella Silva set the women's 100 fly meet record with a 57.82 in prelims before winning the finale in 58.29. Silva's season best is a 10th-ranked 57.60 set at the Rio stop of the World Cup. Fabiola Molina took second in 58.65, while Daniele Jesus claimed third in 1:00.11.

Fernanda Alvarenga set the meet record in the women's 200 back with a 2:10.78 in prelims before exhibitioning a top time of 2:12.21 in the finale. Rebeca Bretanha was listed first in 2:14.29, while Larissa Cieslak placed second in 2:14.76. Isabela Silva finished third in 2:15.44.

Poliana Okimoto lowered the meet record in the women's 800 free with a winning time of 8:39.79. Joanna Maranhao placed second in 8:44.84, while Ana Da Cunha finished third in 8:45.27.

Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato topped the women's 50 free in 24.87, while Julyana Kury took second in 25.15. Delaroli-Cazziolato's best time this year is a 24.62 from the Rio stop of the World Cup. Tatiana Barbosa placed third in 25.17.

Lucas Salatta touched out Glauber Silva, 52.40 to 52.53, in the men's 100 fly. Henrique Martins touched third in 52.66.
