Brazilian Sets World Record in the Short Course 50-meter Fly

SANTOS, Brazil. December 18. BRAZIL'S Kacio Marcio de Almeida set a new world short course record in the 50-meter butterfly at the Brazilian National Short Course Championships in Santos last night.

The 21-year-old touched in 22.60 seconds to better the previous mark of 22.71 set by American Ian Crocker at the Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis on October 10, 2004. Almeida had shown he was ready to rock 'n roll when he swept all three butterfly events with very fast times at the FINA World Cup meets in Australia and South Korea last month.

It had been seven years since a Brazilian had set a world record. The last record had been set at the Short Course World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in December 1998. There, the Brazilian men's 4×100-meter freestyle relay team of Gustavo Borges, Fernando Scherer, Carlos Jayme and Alexandre Massura clocked a world record 3:10.45.
