Boise State, New Mexico, Seattle vs. BYU

PROVO, Utah, November 6. WITH four teams on the Richards Building pool deck Friday, BYU came out on top of each team with the women competing against New Mexico, Seattle University and Boise State and the men against Seattle.

For the men, BYU (2-1, 0-1 MWC) beat Seattle 184-108. On the women's side, BYU (5-0, 2-0 MWC) beat Mountain West Conference opponent New Mexico 234-65, Seattle University 241-52 and Boise State 199-99. UNM beat Seattle 200-93, BSU defeated UNM 201-97 and BSU beat Seattle 228-64.

"We had a good week of practice leading up to this meet and it paid off," said BYU head coach Tim Powers. "We didn't push as hard as we did last week, but we still managed to get the job done, so that's important. We look forward to the Toshiba Invitational in two weeks where we expect to swim well at sea level."

Senior Natasha Menezes took home two wins in the 200 free and the 500 while junior John Kendrick tallied two wins in the same events.

The women started out the meet winning the 200-medley relay with Candice Smith leading off in the backstroke, Sara Jayne Christiansen Baldwin in the breaststroke, Rachel Grant in the fly and Aleesha Miller in the free. In the men's 200-medley relay, BYU's ‘B' relay fought to the end, being out-touched by Seattle by .04 seconds. The ‘A' 200-medley relay team of Jeff Ferrell, David Mason, Brent Stevenson and Christian Keil finished with a time of 1:35.36.

In the 1000 free, Michelle Menezes and Amy Xu were neck-and-neck the entire race, going 1-2 in the event. M. Menezes posted a time of 10:28.61 while Xu chalked up a 10:29.22. Freshman Hayden Palmer led the men in the 1000 free with a time of 10:00.32 with Chad Fong behind him in second with a time of 10:21.93.

Senior Natasha Menezes won the 200 free, clocking in at 1:51.23. John Kendrick followed suit in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.90, winning the event.

Smith next won the women's 100-yard back with a time of 57.07 and Keil placed second in the men's 100-yard back with a time of 53.37, behind Bryson Chiu of Seattle University (52.71).

Baldwin represented the Cougars in the 100-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 1:04.83 while Vytenis Slenys won on the men's side (59.26).

NCAA qualifier Rachel Grant won the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.91 as Jodie Ellis came in second with a time of 2:07.95. Brenton Stevenson followed in the men's 200 fly placing second with a time of 2:02.02 behind Eric Pedack of Seattle (1:57.92).

In the women's 50 free, BYU placed second through fourth with senior Kirsty Ferrell leading the way, clocking in at 23.82, just behind Stephanie North of Boise State in first (23.68). Miller placed third (24.03) and Sam Crist fourth (24.12).

The men's 50-yard freestyle was led by Jordon Anderson of Seattle (20.73), with Daniel Bates (21.78) and David Mason (21.82) behind him in second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Syrena Miskin led the Cougar divers on the 3-meter board, tallying a score of 293.05 with Ava Jackman behind her in second (289.25). Ron Morris led the men on the 1-meter board with a point total of 302.70, followed by freshman Nic Suder (289.35) and sophomore Travis Day (272.65).

The women's 100 free was next on the night with BSU sprinter, North, on top again with a time of 51.88. Miller and K. Ferrell followed with times of 52.32 and 53.17, respectively. Again for Seattle was Anderson in the 100 free, winning the event with a time of 46.94 while Keil came in second (47.65).

Smith led the backstrokers again in the 200 back winning the event in 2:01.92 while J. Ferrell won the 200 back in 1:55.73.

Alexis Morehouse of Seattle won the women's 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.68) as Baldwin came in second with a time of 2:22.35. Slenys also won the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.67.

N. Menezes found her second win of the night in the 500 free, finishing with a time of 5:00.59. The win marks her fourth win at four meets in the 500 free on the season, the best time coming against UNLV on Oct. 30 when she broke the BYU pool record once held by her mother 27 years prior. Kendrick won the 500 free for the Cougar men with a time of 4:43.17.

Grant next won the 100 fly with a time of 56.09 while Pedack of Seattle won the event for the men. Stevenson placed second in the event with a time of 53.47.

Ashlee Erickson of New Mexico won the women's 1-meter event with a total of 277.60 points while freshman Dayna Christensen placed second (266.40). All-American Brandon Watson came out on top on the 3-meter board with a point total of 362.50 and Morris in second with 323.80 points.

Boise State went 1-2 in the women's 200 individual medley with Chelsea Lopus in front (2:09.50) and freshman Melissa Manser in third with a time of 2:11.33.

The BYU swim team will next travel to Long Beach, Calif. for the Toshiba Invitational Nov. 19-21.
