Bob Laughna Named Head Coach For Women’s Swimming and Diving at Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Michigan, August 23. KEN Godfrey, the athletic director at Northern Michigan University, announced the hiring of Bob Laughna as the head women's swimming and diving coach.

"We are very fortunate to have a person with Bob's background as the new head coach of the swimming and diving program," said Godfrey. "Bob has a passion and a vision for the program and a commitment to see the student-athletes excel academically."

Laughna is no stranger to NMU as he has been associated with the women's swim team for over 20 years. He has been a volunteer assistant and was the interim head coach for the 2002-03 season.

"I am very honored to have this opportunity to work with the NMU swimming and diving team," said Laughna. "It is a privilege to be part of a community that fosters academic and athletic excellence."

Laughna has also coached Marquette area teams the Gator Swim Club (1990-00) and the Watercats Aquatic Club (1985-90). From 1990-01, Laughna was the head coach of the men and women for the United States Deaflympic Swim Team as the team competed in Rome (2001), Denmark (1997) and Bulgaria (1993).

He was the head coach of the United States Developmental Deaf Swim Team as the team competed in Calgary (1990) and Minsk (1991). Laughna was the head coach for two International Deaf Championship Meets. His teams finished in first place at the World Cup Championship in Sweden (1992) and at the World Championship in Belgium (1995).

Laughna received his bachelor's degree in physical education (1969) from NMU. He has two master's degrees as one is from Eastern Michigan University in deaf education (1974) and from California State University-Northridge in administration/supervision (1985).
