Big Ten Announces Weekly Awards

CHICAGO, Illinois, November 1. INDIANA University nearly swept this week’s Big Ten Conference weekly awards. Christina Loukas (Female Diver), Taylor Roberts (Male Diver) and Leila Vaziri (Female Swimmer) grabbed three of the four awards for the Hoosiers. Meanwhile, Matt Grevers of Northwestern won the Male Swimmer of the Week award.

Grevers took first in all four of his contests as Northwestern defeated Indiana on Friday. The senior posted an NCAA “A” Standard time in the 100-yard backstroke (47.24) and a “B” time in the 50-yard freestyle (20.07). Grevers’ relay teams took first in the 200-yard medley (1:29.42) and the 200-yard freestyle medley (1:21.33). This is Grevers’ sixth career weekly award.

Roberts took first in three of his four entries last week, including one- (348.00) and three-meter (328.35) victories over No. 8 Northwestern on Friday. The junior won the one-meter (361.50) against No. 19 Arizona State on Saturday, placing him eighth in school history in that event. This is Roberts’ second career weekly honor.

Vaziri posted five NCAA “B” Standard times as she placed first in three individual and two relay events last week. The senior notched “B” marks in three entries Friday against Northwestern as she took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.61) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.27). Vaziri also recorded “B” times and first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (54.74) and 100-yard freestyle (50.82) Saturday as Indiana defeated Arizona State. This is the third career weekly honor for Vaziri and her first this season.

Loukas placed first in all four of her events last week as she swept the one- (293.32) and three-meter (319.80) contests against Northwestern on Friday and Arizona State (321.60, 360.90) on Saturday. All of Loukas’ scores surpassed NCAA Zone qualifying marks as the junior helped her team to victories over the Wildcats and Sun Devils. This is the fifth career weekly selection for Loukas and her second consecutive honor.
