Big 12 Championships: Day One

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, February 24. ONE record was broken in the pool on the first day of at the 2010 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships as the Texas men jumped out to a first-day lead with 113 points. Texas A&M followed with 110 and Missouri was close behind with 107 points. On the women’s side, UT and A&M are tied at 74, followed by Missouri and Kansas (62), Iowa State (54) and Nebraska (28).

Texas’ men’s and women’s squads tabbed NCAA automatic-qualifying times in the 200-yard medley relay finals. The men’s team of Cole Cragin, Scott Spann, Hill Taylor and Jimmy Feigen clocked in at 1:25.02, while Jessica Guro, Laura Sogar, Kathleen Hersey and Bethany Adams swam a 1:38.30 for the women.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, TAMU’s Kristin Heiss, Melissa Hain, Maureen McLaine and Julia Wilkinson with a time of 7:01.63. On the men’s side, it was the Longhorns who finished ahead as the relay of Ricky Berens, Scott Jostes, Jackson Wilcox and Dave Walters swam a 6:15.75.

UT’s Drew Livingston walked away with his first Big 12 one-meter title and second overall title after scoring a 415.75 and setting a new Big 12 Championship meet record. Livingston won the platform competition at last year’s event as well.

The championships resume Thursday at 10 a.m. with preliminary action, with the finals slated for a 6 p.m. start.
