Belgium Nationals: Griet Buelens Lowers 200 Fly National Record; Men’s 400 Free Relay Record Falls

MOLENBEEK, Belgium, May 1. DURING the first night of swimming at the Belgium Nationals, Griet Buelens dropped her national record in the women's 200 fly. The men's 400 free relay record also fell.

Buelens crushed her previous record with a time of 2:12.41 to claim the title. Her old standard had been a 2:13.34 from way back in 2005.

The men's relay team of Pierre Romanini, Cedric Delvoie, Pholie Systermans and Yoris Grandjean smashed the national record in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:28.07. That performance cleared the previous record of 3:29.73, while the team of Jasper Aerents, Bjorn Ballyu, Sam Debaveye and Glenn Surgeloose also surpassed the old standard with a second-place 3:29.68.

Jolien Sysmans started the first day of finals with a time of 56.62 to win the women's 100 free. She came within a half-a-second of Emily Vavourakis' 2006 national record of 56.10.

National-record holder Grandjean followed with a near-record time of 22.60 to win the men's 50 free. He holds the current standard with a 22.51 from March's European Championships.

In another close call with a national record, Silke Van Hoof touched in 29.82 in the women's 50 back, off Tine Bossuyt's national record of 29.46 from 2006.

Louis Croenen followed in the men's 400 IM with a winning time of 4:38.91, while Francois Heersbrandt claimed the men's 100 fly with a time of 54.35.

Fanny Lecluyse snared the women's 200 breast title with a time of 2:37.28, while Stef Verachten won the men's 800 free crown in 8:30.55.

In other relay action, the team of Jessica Albert, Julie Libert, Sarah Delvaux and Sarah Wegria won the women's 800 free in 8:41.20.
