Badgers Close Dual Meet Schedule With Intrasquad; Mania Pops Pool Record 400 IM

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin reports its swimming and diving teams competed in the annual Cardinal/White scrimmage Feb. 4 at the UW Natatorium. The White squad edged the Cardinal squad with a score of 121-102.

Following the introduction of the four seniors; Carly Piper, Adam Mania, Tim Liebhold and Eric Wiesner, the two squads went at it for team bragging rights. Even though it was a scrimmage, and had no effect on rankings or conference standings, the teams were very excited to swim at home and be a part of the special day for the seniors.

"We were a little hesitant to have our last meet be an intra-squad, but it was really exciting and we got a lot out of it," said head coach Eric Hansen.

Breaking the 400-yard IM pool record (3:55.23) that was set last year by Adam Mitchell of Minnesota was senior Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) with a time of (3:53.17) in an exhibition race.

"The guy (Mania) is so talented," said head coach Eric Hansen. "That was one of the records he had marked down that he really wanted to take care of."

Winning 12 of the 23 events, the White team was lead by senior Eric Wiesner (Montrose, Colo.) and Sarah Hernandez (Chico, Calif.). Wiesner won the 50-yard freestyle (20.91), the 500-yard freestyle (4:33.68) and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team(1:26.43). Hernandez took first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.86), the 100-yard butterfly (56.54) and was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.51).

Leading the Cardinal was senior Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) and diver Amanda Witte (LaGrange, Ill.) Mania took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.08) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.24). Witte won both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of (271.43) and (308.40) respectively.

"Amanda dove really well and was very strong today," said diving coach Josh Seykora. "She is very comfortable on the board and is in the right place heading into the Big Ten Championship."

The Badgers will next be in action in Bloomington, Indiana for the women's Big Ten Championships on Feb. 17-19. The men will be in Minneapolis, Minn. Feb. 24-26 for their Big Ten Championships.
