Badger Johnson Named Big-Ten Swimmer of the Week

MADISON, WI, December 8. AFTER posting three NCAA automatic qualifying times and two school records at the Texas Invitational, University of Wisconsin sophomore Susan Johnson (Toledo, Ohio) has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the conference office and Badgers announced this week.

Last weekend in Austin, Texas, Johnson qualified for the 2005 NCAA championships in the 100-yard backstroke (:53.70; :53.66p), the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.32) and the 100-yard fly (:53.64p). Her first-place marks in the backstroke events broke her own school records that she set last season.

"Susan has made a ton of progress this year," head coach Eric Hansen said. "I was very happy with her performance at Texas, and I expect her to get better and better as this season goes on."

The 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year also earned NCAA considerations in the 200-yard (1:42.35) and 400-yard medley relays (3:42.47), as well as the 200-yard (1:32.47), 400-yard (3:21.01) and 800-yard freestyle relays (7:15.49).

Johnson's honor is the second of the season and third of her career.
