Austrian Long Course Championships: Third Day Features Exciting Finishes

VIENNA, Austria, February 27. THE third day of swimming at the Austrian Long Course Championships held in Vienna featured plenty of close calls to gives fans something to be excited about.

Birgit Koschischek won the women's 50 fly in 27.89, while Eva Chaves-Diaz finished second in 28.55. Lisa Zaiser took third in 28.65. Martin Spitzer followed with a 24.44 to win the men's 50 fly. Dietmar Stockinger touched second in 25.70, while Marco Ebenbichler placed third in 25.75.

Verena Klocker touched out Jordis Steinegger, 2:01.67 to 2:01.78, in the women's 200 free. Sabine Freinek finished third in 2:06.01. In another exciting finish, David Brandl touched out Dominik Koll, 1:50.60 to 1:50.65, in the men's 200 free. Dinko Jukic earned third in 1:51.33.

Sandra Swierczewska cruised in the women's 200 breast with a 2:32.67. Uschi Halbreiner finished second in 2:37.39, while Christina Strigl took third in 2:39.87. Hunor Mate followed with an equally impressive margin of victory with a 2:16.08 in the men's 200 breast. Stefan Wipplinger took second in 2:23.00, while Maxim Podoprigora placed third in 2:24.62.

Steinegger touched out Claudia Hufnagl, 1:06.10 to 1:06.50, in the women's 100 back. Caroline Reitshammer led third through fifth-place finishers all in the 1:06 range with a 1:06.53. Nicole Gross (1:06.84) and Lisa Zaiser (1:06.92) also finished within striking range of first. Sebastian Stoss clocked a 57.02 in the men's 100 back for the win. Christian Zluga took second in 58.63, while Oliver Simkovic finished third in 59.31.

Nina Dittrich knocked off Koschischek, 2:14.81 to 2:14.93, in the women's 200 fly. Chaves-Diaz rounded out the top three in 2:22.62. Jukic cleared 2:00 for the win in the men's 200 fly with a 1:59.52. Bernhard Wolf touched second in 2:01.78, while Jakub Maly placed third in 2:04.27.

In relay action, Dittrich, Anais Szekendi, Victoria Schimpl and Steinegger won the women's 400 free in 3:58.31. Marcel Schaufler, Podoprigora, Maly and Stoss earned the men's 400 free title in 3:31.99.
