Australian Youth Olympic Festival Gets Financial Boost

SYDNEY, Australia, January 22. ACCORDING to a report by the Australian Associated Press, John Coates, the president of the Australian Olympic Committee, has promised a $1 million funding raise for the 2009 and 2011 editions of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. That pledge is an increase of 25 percent. The Australian Youth Olympic Festival features athletes from each continent competing in numerous sports.

"We want the standard to keep going up, we want international competition in every sport here, not just Australians," Coates said in the AAP story. "When we set it up (in 2001), I was thinking it was more an event for Australian kids, but the world has moved on. It's now critical that we attract good competition for each of these sports to differentiate this from just Australian championships or an interstate event."
