Australian Masters Record Rewritten

PERTH, Australia, May 21. MASTERS swimming returned to Challenge Stadium, the scene of the FINA World Masters Championships, for a state 1500-meter swim meet.

Success came when Helen Bird of Osborne Park AUSSI Masters broke the 70-74 800 backstroke Australian record on her way through to a 1500 swim that was 0.86 seconds outside the Australian record. Her 800 split time was 16:31.63, breaking Tricia Liddy's 2006 Australian record by 4.16 seconds.

Among other notable swims on the day, Vic Paul of Bold Park club stripped 1.95 seconds off the Australian men's 60-64 long course record in a time of 20:06.29.
