Aussies: We’re Coming to the U.S. for “Duel in the Pool”

SYDNEY, March 21. Australian Swimming reaffirmed its commitment today to compete against the United States in the "Duel in the Pool" on April 6, despite fears over security resulting from the war in Iraq.

Australian high performance director Greg Hodge had indicated that Aussie officials were re-evaluating their participation in the dual meet, a head-to-head clash between the world's two greatest aquatic superpowersd. Today he expressed confidence that the meet was unlikely to be the target of attacks.

"If the advice changes, obviously the board needs to make a decision. We're just going to have to monitor it daily," Hodge said today.

"Obviously, in the course of what's happening overseas the chance of a terrorist act happening somewhere at some time in some way is higher than last week. That's just reality," Hodge said. "But you've got to look at the context of where we are going, in the Midwest United States.

"The message has got out is that we are asking questions about security."
