Aussies’ “Deadly Medley” Relay Team Takes World Record from USA

By Belinda Dennett and Phil Whitten

MELBOURNE, Sept. 4. AUSTRALIAN foursome Matt Welsh, Jim Piper, Geoff Huegill and Ashley Callus tonight smashed the world record for the 4x100m medley relay on night three of the Australian Short Course Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Their time of 3:28.12 sliced 0.78 second off the mark set by the American quartet of Aaron Peirsol, Dave Denniston, Peter Marshall and Jason Lezak at the World Short Course Championships earlier this year in Moscow

Welsh, who broke the world record for 50 meters on night one, led off in a new Commonwealth record of 50.95, followed by breaststroker Jim Piper in 59.44; Geoff Huegill (butterfly) 50.61 and Ashley Callus (freestyle) 47.12.

In tonight's finals, veteran Rob Van der Zant took the men's 100m IM in 54.98, just beating Josh Taylor at 55.13.

Brooke Hanson won her third title in three nights, taking a narrow victory in the women's 100m IM in 1:01.46, two-tenths faster than Alice Mills.

National team members Phil Rogers and Jim piper battled in the 100m breaststroke, with old-timer Rogers getting the nod at 1:00.22 to Piper's 1:00.26. Rogers had swum 59.99 in semis.

aPetria Thomas showed she's not just a butterfly swimmer as she upset Amanda Pasco to win the 400 free in 4:07.26. Pascoe, winner of the 800 and 1500, was a close seond at 4:08.74.

Dyana Calub edged newcomer Nicole Seah in the 50m backstroke in a replay of the 100m race. Tonight Calub clocked 28.29 to Seah's 28.47 seconds.

The women's 50m freestyle was even closer with US-trained Michelle Engflesman out-touching Marieke Guehrer, 25.20 to 25.22.

Josh Krogh had the men's 200m fly entirely his way, winning by over two seconds in 1:56.77.

In the night's final event, Alice Mills sparked her Chandler team to a national club record in the 4x100m freestyle relay. The Chandler quartet clockedf 3;39.71 on the strength of Mills' speedy anchor leg of 54.05.
