Auburn Dethrones Georgia for NCAA Women’s Crown; Coughlin, Correia, Kirk, Ripple Set Records

AUSTIN, Texas, March 23. AUBURN University rolled over the fastest field in women's NCAA history to record its first-ever NCAA women's title…in any sport.

By winning, War Eagle Coach Dave Marsh joins Randy Reese as the only swim coaches ever to win both men's and women's collegiate crowns.

American and NCAA records were battered mercilessly, with 15 falling over the three-day meet, sveral more than once. A total of 12 new marks were established here, on more than the prvious most productive NCAA meet, held in Austin in 1992, an Olympic year.

Auburn won the meet with 474 points, 88 ahead of three-time defending champion Georgia (386). Pre-meet favorite Stanford edged a surprising USC team by half a point for third, 301-300.5.

Arizona was fifth with 291, followed by Texas (267.5),
Florida (249), Cal (245), SMU (178), and Arizona State and Indiana tied for tenth (136).

1650 yard freestyle
In today's events, SMU's Flavia Rigamonti won her second event, taking the 1650 in 15:52.28, about seven seconds off the time she swam at the WAC Championships. Florida's Janelle Atkinson swam a strong back half to take second (16:01.01). Two-time defending champ, Cara Lane of Virginia, tried to stay with Rigamonti and paid the price, dropping to fifth place before recovering and snatching third (16:04.54).

200 yard backstroke
Now it was Natalie Time. The Cal sophomore, who already had posted astonishing records in the 100 fly (50.01) and 100 back (49.97), blitzed a very strong field in the 200 back, breaking through the 1:50 barrier. When she touched in 1:49.52, the Aquatic Center exploded.

Natalie's splits: 25.28, 52.95, 1:21.00, 1:49.52.

Actually, she went out just a tad too fast, and SMU's Alenka Kejzar actually had a faster final 50 (28.36 to 28.52). Coughlin probably has a 1:48 in her.

Kejzar was second in 1:54.18, while Auburn freshman, Kirsty Coventry beat out fellow Auburn froh Margaret Hoelzer for third, 1:54.37 to 1:54.54.

100 yard freestyle
Jenny Thompson's American and NCAA record had stood since 1992 at 47.61 seconds, iconic, untouchable. Tonight it was touched … and broken. Twice.

In the 100 free, Maritza Correia split 22.81 at the 50, then came roaring back in 24.75 to light up the boards at 47.56. A new American and NCAA record.

Her teammate, Stefanie Williams as second in 48.37, while Arizona's Sarah Tolar, winner of the 200 yesterday, was third in 48.78

200 yard Breaststroke
The fastest and deepest field ever assemble for the final of the 200 yard Breaststroke. The race figured to be a three-way battle between Stanford's Tara Kirk, winner of the 100 breast yesterday; ASU's Hungarian import, Agnes Kovacs, the reigning Olympic and world champion; and Alabama's Anne Poleska, a German who is the current European short course champ in this event.

It was.

Kirk took it out incredibly hard, splitting 29.00 at the 50 and an amazing 1:01.17 at the 100. But Kovacs (1:01.64) and Poleska (1:01.83) stayed close behind.

Both Europeans made their move on the third 50, and at the 150 yard turn, Kovacs was virtually even with Kirk and Poleska a foot behind. The writing was on the wall.

Or was it. Kirk executed a tremendous underater pullout and regained her lead, only to relinquish it again over the next 25 yards. at 175, all three women turned together.

Then Kirk dug deep and did it again–took a half body-lenth lead with a monster underwater pullout. Kovacs and Poleska struggled to catch up again, but Kirk beat them to the wall.

At the end, Kirk's 2:07.36 broke Kristy Kowal's 1999 mark of 2:07.66. Kovacs was also under the old record at 2;07.64. Poleska touched in 2:07.86, making her the fourth fastest woman in history.

Amazingly, Kirk's 33.04 final 50 was the fastest in the field.

200 yard Butterfly
Stanford's Shelly Ripple is the consummate team player. One of the greatest swimmers in NCAA women's history, the Cardinal senior had never won an individual title.

This, experts agreed, would be her race. It was even whispered that she had a shot at Mary T's sacred, 21-year-old American record of 1:52.99.

Ripple left no doubt about the outcome. In her last individual collegiate race, she blasted into the lead and never gave it up, splitting 25.54 at the 50 and 53.19 at the 100. Then she kept on going.

Ripple tighted up a bit on the final 50, but she still had he fastest split for every lap. When she hit the wall, the clock read 1:53.23–not an American record, but an NCAA mark breaking the standard of 1:53.36 set by Nevada's Limin Liu in 1999. It was also the second fastest in history.

SMU's Georgina Lee was second in 1:54.92, followed by Rebecca Harper, a Florida freshman at 1:55.66.

400 yard freestyle relay
Fittingly enough, the final event produced two American records.

Cal's Natalie Coughlin — who else? — led off the Bears' relay by breaking Maritza Correia's still-dripping 100 free mark. she split 22.75, 6-hundredths faster than Correia, and finished in 47.47 — 9 hundredths under Correia's mark.

Georgia and Auburn both destroyed the American/NCAA mark of 3:14.52 set by Texas last year. At the ned it was Georgia winning in 3:13.71 to Auburn's 3:13.88.
