Auburn Defeats Crimson Tide Men and Women in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, AL, November 22. NCAA Champion Auburn men and women gained their first road wins of the season on Friday, with the men downing Alabama 153-99, while the women were victorious over the Crimson Tide by a 140-105 count.

The No. 1 Auburn men improved to 2-0 this season. The Tigers are now 20-16 all-time against Alabama. The Auburn women, ranked second in the nation, upped their record to 1-1 on the year. The Tigers hold a 17-8 all-time record against the Crimson Tide after the victory at the Don Gambril Olympic Pool.

“As always, the Auburn-Alabama meet brings out emotions on both sides,” Auburn head coach David Marsh said. “Alabama swam very well and had some fabulous times. I was impressed by the way the Auburn team competed in the midst of heavy training this week.”

The Auburn women saw three individual competitors and one relay team earn provisional qualifying marks in the meet with Alabama.

Jeri Moss, already a provisional qualifier in the 200 back, won the 100 back with a time of 55.67, giving the Riverside, Calif., native a provisional qualifying time. Margaret Hoelzer, a Huntsville, Ala., native, took two provisional qualifying marks, in the 400 IM and 500 Free, respectively. She finished the 400 IM with a time of 4:17.68 and the 500 Free at 4:53.46.

In addition, the women’s 800 Free relay team * comprising of Adrienne Binder, Jana Kolukanova, Erin Volcan and Hayley Peirsol * earned a provisional qualifying mark, winning the event with a time of 7:28.35.

The Auburn men, meanwhile, saw Eric Shanteau, already a provisional qualifier in the 200 IM, earn another. His new qualifying time came in the 400 IM, winning the event with a time of 3:52.52. The Lilburn, Ga., native also claimed top season performances in two other events. He earned top times in the 200 Butterfly (1:49.69) and 200 Breast (2:02.54).

“Eric had a very good time in the 400 IM at this point of the season,” Marsh said.

Doug Van Wie, meanwhile, earned his top time in the 200 Back (1:48.55).

The men and women both competed in the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions, with Matt Bricker winning the 1-meter (333.45 score) and Andrew Sivulka taking home the 3-meter (361.12). Lynnsey Segraves won the 3-meter women’s event with a score of 271.72.

The Tiger swimming and diving teams will next host the annual Auburn Tiger Invitational Dec. 2-4 at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
