AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix: Day One

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, May 5. THREE Americans are among the divers who have advanced to Saturday's finals at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix after strong performances on Thursday, the opening day of the four-day event.

Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) and Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.) both advanced to the men's 3-meter finals, and Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H./Indianapolis, Ind.) qualified for the women's 10-meter final. The Grand Prix is also being used to select the U.S. team in the individual events for this summer's World Championships. Dumais and Ipsen earned spots in 3-meter, and Parratto and Brittany Viola (Orlando, Fla./Miami, Fla.) qualified for the world team on 10-meter.

While diving in the rain, Dumais and Ipsen advanced to the men's 3-meter finals after finishing second and third in semifinal B. Dumais finished less than a point behind China's Qin Kai, who won the semifinal with 454.70 points. Dumais scored 453.80 points, and Ipsen picked up the final qualifying spot with 446.45.

China's He Chong scored 489.10 points to win the other semifinal, with Japan's Sho Sakai (463.45) and Brazil's Cesar Castro (453.10) also advancing to Saturday's final.

Parratto advanced to Saturday's finals after placing second with 339.30 points in semifinal A. She was fourth in the preliminaries.

"I'm so excited. This is just my second senior international meet, and my goal was to be consistent and stay confident. I really just wanted to make semifinals, so I'm excited I made finals," Parratto said.

China's Hu Yadan (387.30) won the semifinal, and Italy's Noemi Batki (317.30) also moved on to the finals. Viola finished fifth in the semifinal and did not advance, but she was still pleased to qualify for worlds after placing sixth in the preliminaries.

"Everything has been so unexpected, first winning nationals to qualify for this meet and then qualifying for the World Championships – this was nothing I had in my foresight. I'm extremely excited," said Viola, who had been away from competition for a year and a half while recovering from two foot surgeries.

Advancing from semifinal B were China's Chen Ruolin (373.75), Australia's Brittany Broben (351.00) and Germany's Nora Subschinski (330.75).

Four other U.S. divers competed Thursday. Katie Bell (Columbus, Ohio) finished 12th with 303.70 points, and Anna James (Midland, Texas) was 20th at 245.25 in the women's 10-meter preliminaries. Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass.) finished 22nd in men's 3-meter with 342.80 points, and Drew Livingston (The Woodlands, Texas) scored 342.55 for 23rd.

The World Championships team members were selected based on a portion of scores from the USA Diving Winter National Championships and the Grand Prix preliminaries.

The AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix continues through Sunday. Friday's competition begins at 10 a.m. with women's 3-meter preliminaries and semifinals. Men's 10-meter preliminaries start at 3 p.m.
